Over the years we have grown from a traditional wholesaler into the company we are today. When we moved from the Spaanse Polder to Barendrecht in , the trade centre was the place to be for us. Besides citrus, many fruit and vegetables were traded in Barendrecht at the time. When my brother Ad left for Spain to start production company Savasun, the import flows only increased. After the Eastern Bloc opened up, a score of new markets were opened besides the traditional markets, which resulted in much Much trade happened on site due to that, which was delivered by lorries and trailers.
We even made plans to build in Barendrecht, but it took so long we decided to build next to the existing location of Staay-Export. We had capacity there after the Russian boycott. We had just built 2, m2, so that made the decision to move even simpler. Besides, facilities here are very advantageous. When I arrive here on Monday morning, dozens of lorries are sometimes queueing nicely. In Barendrecht,. We had a fine time, but we never once regretted moving here.
Are you still much affected by the Russian boycott? We were one of the larger exporters to Russia. On the day the boycott was implemented, we had 48 cars on the road to Russia. We still do overseas trade with Russia, but that export has dropped by 75 per cent. That had a significant impact. This export was never more than per cent of our returns. Is that much? In the past, Dutch exporters sent as much as 95 per cent of their trade to Germany, and that has now also changed.
We worked with customers who paid well, we had an experienced team on Russia, and we had started supplying directly to supermarkets. Importers over there have now started looking elsewhere and local production has increased enormously. Dutch greenhouse builders and suppliers have had good jobs. Opinion in recent years. And wonderful products are also grown in nearby countries such as Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
Even if the boycott is lifted, the question remains how much the market would recover. At first in cooperation with local growers for the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables in Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries. The plan was to continue doing market research into building greenhouses, wholesaler and distribution centres and processing companies.
But for now, there are still some hurdles in our way. With the takeovers of Alexport, Hispa, Van Rijn, Frupaks, Vernooij and Timmermans you have shown quite the urge for expansionism in recent years. Can we expect any more takeovers? For that matter, the takeovers of vegetable processing companies Dekker Frissland in Uden and Hoeve in Dronten, banana ripening plant Kosterman in The Hague and of Eussifruit in Limburg precede these.
Due to changes within the world of retail, we had a period of reorganisations. I wanted a growth plan, but if you want to autonomously grow ten per cent per year, quite a lot has to happen. Besides, we wanted to take up a stronger position in Dutch top fruit. That resulted in the takeovers of Frupaks, Vernooij and Timmermans. In Spain we already had a better position than Hispa, but the overseas activities were interesting to us. Nowadays we import a good range of melons and pineapples from our own production companies , and in addition, Hispa had more customers in the Eastern Bloc than us.
The takeover of Alexport boosted our export to Eastern Europe even more. And the acquisition of Van Rijn in Venlo was the result of earlier talks. He was right about that. Perhaps sometimes a quick one, but if we see an opportunity somewhere, we can quickly make a decision. My brother Ad is like that as well. The only dif-. I saw that potential when we took over Dekker Frissland in , although that came about quite coincidentally. More and more meal salads can be found in refrigerated sections in supermar-.
I think we can easily double our sales in this field. Men like Rien Panneman saw opportunities in this much sooner, but I gradually became enthusiastic about this. When I think about lettuce, I think of the large heads that were grown and sold here on my native soil, but the world is changing.
When Delissen came to us years ago with their lettuce, I thought they were worthless little plants at first, but the sales of that Saladtrio is quite serious now. The plans to organise the lettuce production in the factory in Dronten, have now been abandoned. We have plenty of space on site and are going to organise the production next to the processing factory. To achieve this indoor farming, years of research with, among others, Rijk Zwaan, Certhon and Philips Lighting, were conducted.
That was a costly business, but we are now far enough along that we can actually start. There are many places that lack the space to grow products in this world. The production is naturally expensive for Dutch standards, but if you know that 80 grammes of lettuce goes into a meal salad, the cost changes. Is there still space for pure trade in future, or do you think of yourself as service provider for supermarkets more and more? Save time and money with the best software solution Freshng: is the link between fruit and vegetable businesses and optimal business results.
It has been a bit of a supposititious child in recent years. I enjoy visiting those for a night or a day, and I see dozens of lorries standing around, in which drivers are sleeping who have unloaded their trade. That shows free trade is more, and necessary as well.
Supplying tailor-made products to supermarkets also requires volumes, so these two things can only go hand in hand. Free trade is often capable to respond to price fluctuations quicker as well, thus getting rid of a larger volume. Besides, greengrocers are also returning to high streets more often. How long will you stay at the helm of the Staay Food Group? For now we just think the work is still too much fun.
However, we are realis For example, we recently called all of our children to discuss this. I think it would be wonderful if the company remained in the family, but. Ad does have two children in the business. The future will show who will lead the company next. Our father founded the company, we were able to grow the company, and I hope our company will have a good future after us as well.
In the past, I arranged all of our Spanish and other programmes myself. These required quite a number of cars on a weekly basis. I can. I do my rounds at the company every day, and am still very much active, but I nowadays also take the time to read the newspaper or go out for a bit.
For example, I recently visited our factory in Dronten with Ben van der Waal and some friends for an afternoon, and in the evening we went into town for a bite to eat. I never used to make time to do things like that in the past. I think we have good employees.
We have employees just in the Netherlands, and we need each and every one of them, from warehouse workers to drivers, commerce and the management: Together we are the goodwill of the company. I immediately take action if I see something goes wrong, but I also give people a lot of freedom. I think Ad and I are like our father in that respect.
I was never really one for brooding, but I think about my father more and more. Want to know more? Swedish consumers have also discovered buying groceries online. Online sales are rapidly growing, and fruit and vegetables are a part of this trend. This is a much-heard comparison used by Swedish traders to explain the challenges they face within their country. The enormous distance is reflected, for instance, in transport costs necessary to reach supermarkets in the north of the country.
During the two-day transport, the fruit continues ripening, Johan Andersson from Kalundbladh explains. Near the west coast of the country, at the level of Copenhagen and the Kattegat, the fruit and vegetable centre of the country can be found. For the import, the traders have a network within Europe. Many importers have direct lines to Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. Products from the Southern Hemisphere are usually imported via the Netherlands.
The port of Helsingborg, the second port in the country, annually handles about , TEU of seaborne freight, and another , TEU of land freight. For the slightly more northern port of Gothenburg, no exact figures are available, but on its website, the largest port of the country.
The northern-most growers can be found around the polar circle, but most of the production can be found in the south. These local products are very popular. Demand for local products is quickly increasing. This is seen in, for example, the investments made by the cooperative in the storage of cabbage. Because of this, cabbage can be supplied year-round. Be part of Foodcenter Reijerwaard! Foodcenter Reijerwaard is expanding.
We are developing a sustainable, innovative, industrial site of high quality for logistics in agri, fresh and food. We are strategically located and excellent accessible. Foodcenter Reijerwaard is favourably located for the concentration of the large-scale overseas long-sea and European short-sea import of fresh vegetables and fruit, supplemented by a wide range of products grown in the Netherlands.
Van Gelder Groente en Fruit www. Now other American supermarkets are taking their first steps towards a price war. Lidl opened its first branch in the Scandinavian country in All traders admit Lidl does well. They make a profit and are growing, but their market share remains limited. Lidl is only a small player, and only has a market share of 3 to 3. Market leader. The affiliated members fell apart into two groups.
Growers who preferred auctions came together in Odlarlaget, another large cooperative. Although the number of visitors of the auction can be counted on one hand, the cucumber day price is decided here. In a short period, 50 tonnes of cucumbers is marketed.
Not all buyers take the trouble to visit the auction, because the auction can also be followed online. The company imports large volumes that are quickly sold to various customers. The strawberries are mostly grown outdoor. Tunnels are used to extend the season, but demand peaks in June and July.
Most growers also offer their fruit alongside roads. Various varieties are grown. Sonata is not grown much, because of the ICA has a market share of more than 40 per cent. Compared to other countries, prices in supermarkets are high. Yet there. Growers consciously choose certain varieties. With these special varieties, growers can control the market.
The Swedish tomato price is decided by the situation in. We have the amount of square metres of supermarket for a country with 50 million inhabitants, and supermarkets have long opening hours, which is also expensive. Finally, Lidl also adjusts its strategy. Some packs have a small flag printed on them. Your specialist in Fresh Produce cardboard packaging info zalpak-straatman.
Creative Solutions Casepacker systems for horizontal and vertical loading of -in bags packed- products into carton cases, display cases, carton trays, crates and containers. Pick and place systems for bags, trays or special products. Control and transport systems. Demand for local products appears to be increasing faster than demand for organic products.
Organic mostly plays a part on the banana market. This is due to reports in Swedish media a few years ago, which explained how many pesticides are used in the production. According to media, at least seven products are used that could be harmful to public health. Swedish consumers embraced organic bananas overnight. Two online shops, mat. Returns of the latter amounts to one billion SEK million euro. Yet one trader admits that these new initiatives are also a bit alarming.
That is because of the impact online can have on various links in the supply chain. Multiple traders know relatively more fruit. This importer has also seen the online market growing. Seventy per cent of online consumers buys fruit or vegetables. In shops, that percentage is much lower.
ICA is the largest supermarket chain in the country. Each shop is owned by a shop manager. In recent years, this market doubled every two years, and ICA is growing faster than the market. That was a major change. The efforts she made for the company, but also for the sector, have fortunately also been noticed outside the company.
It was the reason she was made an officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau at her farewell. Fortunately, that will leave people with much knowledge and experience. She knows the company like no one else does. How did you experience this? Of course there was quite a transition coming from the world of banking into the import and export of fruit and vegetables. The speed of operations and decision-making is a lot of fun for me, and it energises me enormously.
It was becoming more difficult to make speed in banking due to regulations. Because of this, you could be less focused on customers. Here you can really do what your good at for your growers and customers, without getting distracted by other matters. For example, about growing avocados and the logistical processes.
However, before I went into banking, I worked for a plant nursery in the agrarian sector, and. It might have been 30 years since I worked at the plant nursery, but I still remember things from that time. When I joined the order pickers for a day, they thought it was surprising I knew how to drive a forklift truck.
We grew into the company we now are together, and we share our values and culture. Our three core values — pioneering, pas-. We continue to build a good team, to drive processes and to optimise and anticipate changing markets and supply chains. My interests have always been in that. With our large shareholder, Norwegian purchasing combination Bama Gruppen, we have built a strong position on the market. We expect to continue that growth. Does Bama have a firm hold on the reins?
We know what we can do for each other. A relevant share of our sales go to Bama. It has been like that since the start. Quite a few countries could take a page from their book. Has competition been standing still? They did look at us, but they thought we might not make it. We dared going for something, and we always believed in it.
But we also had to follow the rules every company has to follow, without knowing what would happen. Because of this, we managed to build ourselves a prominent position. And we want to continue being prominent, and grow with our partners.
With our experience and data, we have a lead that we have to manage to retain. From current Dutch players, overseas producers starting a sales office here, or a retailer starting to do his own ripening? The economy is starting to do better and better.
We need each other in Europe. A battle for the continents is happening in order to have enough product available. Asia is growing to five billion inhabitants, who will also have more to spend, consumption in the US continues developing, and besides, exotics import in Europe also continues to be considerable.
The Netherlands plays an important part in this. We believe in focus and an entire world can still be gained for our products in Europe. Only 26 per cent of the Dutch eat avocados. That means they still have to be introduced to the other 74 per cent. If we focus on this, we expect avocados will experience an enormous increase. Are you still good in the new building for now? Employees are becoming more creative in efficiently using the space as. Is it becoming more difficult to fill vacancies?
The Polish. We make considerably investments in training. We recently followed a management development training with 54 people from all layers of the company. In the past, we had one Aweta sorting line, now we have five. But you personally have to feed information in sorting machines like that. Which vacancies are most difficult to fill? Someone like that has to have much knowledge of the product, but they also have to keep in mind the logistic processes, and they have to work with growers to really get the best possible product.
This also involves partnerships. You have to work together. Our employees have to be entrepreneurs. We offer great facilities for employees, including a company restaurant. We play the ball, not the man. Company interests come first. Is that an American style? The style is therefore a combination of both cultures. That is also reflected in the quality of our products. Our products always have to be flavourful. Sticking to the concept is therefore essential.
Ready-to-eat has to be ready-to-eat. Consumers makes repeat purchases based on flavour. That turned out to be a golden combination to persuade consumers to eat more fruit and vegetables. Back in , before every retailer started asking for it, we drew up our own ethical trade agreement. We have four people working on. Regarding level, these growers are not below the best Dutch growers.
Awareness of the necessity to guarantee social conditions exists on the market by now. Is organic an issue for you? How is the relation between wholesaler and retail for you? Our goal is to grow sales towards retail, wholesalers and exporters proportionally. All customers are equally important to us. MRL requirements for imported products are often stricter than for European products.
An authorised MRL of a certain substance on a strawberry can be much higher than the authorised value of that same substance on a pomegranate. It would be good if Brussels paid more attention to that. Is it becoming more difficult for you to guarantee product availability? Look at the cold front in Spain earlier this year, the heat wave in Chile, and the rain in Peru.
At times like that, we unfortunately have less product for our customers at our disposal. Prices rise because of increasing demand and production falling. We encourage our growers to increase production responsibly. How is your berry department? The berry category is very important to us. Two of those products are even in our top five, which consists of avocados, strawberries, blueberries, mangoes and asparagus.
We expect a significant increase in the soft fruit category because of future strategic cooperations. Many of your products come from far. We also sell many peppers. Dutch growers of exotic products can definitely report for duty. Yet some noise can also be heard about the extreme water usage.
We hired an agronomist who focuses on improvements in the fields of cultivation, water usage and soil fertility fulltime. In recent years, some of our growers already managed to decrease water usage from 1, to litres per kilo. But the discussion should obviously be held.
A cultivation area in Chile, that indeed has a water shortage, but where only four per cent of Chilean avocados are grown, is sometimes considered to be the entire Chilean avocado production. Compare avocados to meat, for which 15, litres are needed for one kilo. Avocados are rightly superfoods, healthy, versatile and easy to use.
After all, it would be better if the sector itself maintained the standard. Indeed, according to him, the Fair Produce label is still current, and with the integration of GRASP standards in the quality mark, they are also covertly looking at expansion into other sectors. With project manager Gerlof Roubos he talks about the ambitions of the quality mark. Between and , the inspection of the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment SZW discovered abuses at more than a quarter of the inspected companies.
There were cases of underpayment, illegal employment and fiscal violations. To handle these abuses, the Fair Produce certificate was set up. By now, about 90 per cent of the sector has been certified, and Uli and Gerlof noticed profit margins have improved.
Fair WAS does state companies are responsible for the temp agency paying correct wages. By only using certified temp agencies, the risk of liability is decreased. We can prevent this with Fair Produce. When a company loses its certificate, they try to earn it back as soon as possible, Gerlof knows. Produce is relevant, among other things, because the inspection of SZW often needs much time to reach a verdict and this can be contested, according to Gerlof.
Poland is emerging as a production country, but internationally, the certificate is less well-known. Less, because people are working hard to put Fair Produce on the international map as well. There are contacts with international retailers who are discovering the certificate. Gerlof cannot yet announce which.
An assessment is conducted which inspects a number of points. For Fair Produce, you have to meet all requirements. Because of that, the certificate becomes more visible for international retail. For that, GlobalGAP sets up general basic standards, and the requirements can.
Gerlof gives the example that GRASP requires underage children of employees to receive an elementary education. Besides an international expansion, there are also plans to broaden the certificate. The asparagus and strawberry cultivation are two sectors that have also been investigated. Besides, there are legal requirements for which the inspection sometimes turns a blind eye, for example, when working overtime during a sudden heatwave.
Because of that, there are plenty of opportunities to broaden it. For decades, Achiel de Witte has been a welcome guest in the Belgian sector. He once started as a worker in a local supermarket, and over the course of some dozens of years he built his own trade company into a large empire.
Walls and ceiling have been broken away, new walls have been placed. Among the construction workers are the desks of the workers. The building is located on the shopping street, at walking distance from the Antwerp Zoo and the beautiful Central Station.
In time it is intended that he will only come by twice a week at most. He now mostly invests a lot of time in building up the crew of workers. With this move, I went back to my roots. I once started in a supermarket. We have now brought these together into one whole. That direction is under management. David Magnus is in charge of the shop.
He has quite a bit of experience in the sector, and he is the right man in the right place. Much is being renovated right now, when should it be finished and how will it look? When we reopen in the fourth week of September, it will look completely different. There will be a restaurant at. Specialist in Dutch soft fruit Proud grower, packer and supplier of redcurrants, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries.
Everything will be made of glass, so customers can see the butchers working. It will be a modern fresh market. Why will this Fresh market in Antwerp be successful? We have visited other fresh markets in Spain and the UK. That way, we hope to be able to completely fill the shopping baskets of our customers.
I think both go well together. In the past, a shopkeeper bought products from five different suppliers, but because of changes, total suppliers are necessary. In the past 10 to 15 years, supermarkets have become more and more important, and we have seen competitive pressure increasing for Do wholesalers still have a future? Looking at the first six months of this year, we grew by 8 to 10 per cent in our sales, so there is a future. That has grown into a turnover of 1. Turnover is also increasing in Mechelen, and we see our clientele increasing.
Quality and service, it all starts with that. Are there product groups that are underrepresented within the group? We want to be in control of everything, and offer the complete range. For example, in cities, multicultural societies are a fact. You can tell that ginger, sweet potato and similar products now have impressive volumes. By taking over a cutting plant in Sint-Truiden we also want to take this segment under our own control.
Seventy to 80 per cent of the fourth range is now supplied by suppliers. Within the Group, we do practically everything in consultation. For example, import from new countries cannot be set up without the management. We have four importers within the group who each have their own strength in certain products.
We want to continue building on that. It used to be unthinkable that we would import ginger from China ourselves, but that is normal now. How do you get synergy from the group? By combining strengths and coupling logistics. We have about 60 semitrailers, so that all of our transport can be taken care of in-house again. If the products can be gathered, it becomes advantageous. We can also make our position stronger by, for example, buying products together. In the past, each auction had its own buyer.
Now we buy everything together, because the volume is larger when combined. A wholesaler also needs to have bananas every week. Do you have any more acquisition plans for the coming time? The French company supplies to many French supermarkets, and is quite the opportunity for us. Which requirements should a company meet before Group A. The knowledge of employees is important, there should be a decent base and the company has to meet the most modern hygienic and food safety standards.
Sometimes weak players can work together and combine forces to function better. However, the crew of people is the most important. Within the Group, I can count on loyal and skilled people. The customer is critical and is becoming more critical. You have to keep up quality and freshness to survive.
About 10 to 15 per cent of sales is made from export, especially to Scandinavia, the UK and France. The volume of strawberries, under our own brand CEBON, that we move towards these countries is enormous. How do you explain the difference between the major Dutch export and the relatively small Belgian export? The Netherlands does much more re-export, we are less dedicated to that. Through Fresh Concept in Breda, the Netherlands, we want to become more dedicated to export to existing markets.
The Netherlands has a lot of own production, and is strong in re-export. France, Scandinavia and the UK are the only good options. We believe we can hold on to the growth of seven to ten per cent in coming years. Scaling-up offers opportunities. We already have workers on our payroll. The cutting plant in Sint-Truiden is a great example of that.
Have you ever considered flotation? How do you feel about Brexit? We are not going to take hasty decisions now. Has the growth in the Belgian market regarding that stopped yet? Is having an own brand important? We have the labels Cibel and Cebon, and we want to limit ourselves to these two. All companies in the group use these labels. If you are able to import thoughtful-.
Our software is characterised by Tel: 74 simplicity and 20 reliability. Fax: 22 77 E-mail: jri adpro. When we start a new product, we first do so under the label of the grower or the cooperative. When results are good, we change that into our own labels, and try to create an added value by doing so. Is it becoming more difficult to import because of growing demand in Asia? Price fixing is strong in Asia, and because demand is growing, that affects our pricing.
Take Pink Lady, for example. Besides multinationals, three other companies offer this apple in Belgium, but they are all dealing with the same conditions. We are therefore starting out on an even playing field. Kiwi fruit and mango are no longer exotics.
The volume of ready-toeat mango and avocado has risen impressively, and the same is true for soft fruit. Are supermarkets that start importing a threat? We used to import different products from France and Spain, but that import has now been taken over by retail.
We personally. OTA is the integral partner for the development, realization and improvement of your Agri Factory. That way, he got to know the company, but also the sector, on every level. How does he look at the sector? In an exclusive interview, he speaks freely about the company and the challenges facing the sector. Because of that, I gained a deep knowledge of the company. They supported the adventurers with food and other materials. That trade also turned out to be a gold mine.
In the following decades, the four brothers opened multiple shops and warehouses. David Oppenheimer, one of the brothers, even became mayor of Vancouver. Nowadays, Oppy is a well-known name on the international market. These two multinationals each owns a percentage of Oppy. The company works with the growers in various ways, varying from marketing the products to exclusive contracts and joint ventures. The company has set up a joint venture with the Californian strawberry grower family Hasegawa.
He means, for example, the risks of extreme weather, such as earlier this year in South America. In Europe, hard discounters Aldi and Lidl are setting the retail landscape. Now that Lidl is also going across the pond, the question is how the American market will respond to them. John is unconcerned but always monitoring the landscape.
Canadians might be a bit more price sensitive because of the unfavourable exchange rate with the US dollar, which causes retail prices for import products to increase. Convenience, Fairtrade, organic and ready-to-eat are also advancing. We have seen how the convenience trend changed the citrus sector, which saw shelf space for traditional varieties decreasing in favour of the seedless and easy-peel varieties. We have also noticed the organic supply at conventional retailers is growing significantly.
Fairtrade and other socially responsible products are also preferred in certain retail formats and geographic regions. There are many opportunities to capitalize on these trends. In , the company imported the first Japanese mandarins to Canada. In , the first Granny Smiths were imported from New Zealand, and four years later the first kiwifruit followed to the Canadian market.
The company was also one of the first to set up an import flow of grapes, stone fruit and other summer fruit from Chile. With that, year-round supply was created. How does John see the future of the sector? Online sales are increasing, as is in-store technology. Demand for a more diverse supply is rising.
These developments will shape the Oppy of the future. Southern European cultivators choose seedless grapes The advance of seedless grape varieties is continuing unabated. Despite the fact that there is still a market for seeded grapes from countries including Italy, the seedless grape is also gaining more and more ground in Southern Europe. It is therefore not surprising that breeding stations have also entered this market.
Figures do not distinguish between the various types of grape. The European Union is one of the market leaders on the international grape market. Within the EU, Italy, Greece and Spain are the largest grape countries by far, with a combined share of 93 per cent in the total European production. Estimates talk of an expected harvest of 1. Italy is at the lonely top with approximately one million tonnes.
Spain and Greece follow with , and , tonnes, according to estimates. High production costs, low profitability and increasing competition are a dangerous cocktail for the sector. Cultivators are investing in seedless grapes due to the increasing demand for these varieties. A gradual transition can be seen in Italy, and the seedless grapes have a market share of about 30 per cent in Spain by now.
IFG, founded in , is one of the young players on the market. But the company has grown considerably, and is active in 14 countries by now, including in Southern Europe. Only in Spain do we have some large growers. That is because of the smaller areas and the large number of growers.
Investing in new strains and joining in with the popularity of seedless grapes is relatively expensive for these small cultivators. The seedless grape is appreciated by an ever-growing group of consumers. Yet there are also small growers, often united within a cooperative or coupled to a different sales organisation, who are interested in new varieties. We already see diminishing volumes of Thompson Seedless in certain countries, because production costs for the variety are too high. Besides the fact that a variety needs to be grower friendly, it is also important to know what the consumers think of the grapes.
In recent years, the market for red grapes grew extensively, but white grapes still have a very large market share. Our first big success on the flavoured varieties had been Cotton Candy. According to Marcos, IFG has a further range of new flavoured grape varieties in the pipeline. Verhoeckx Paddenstoelen B. Groda A. Six months ago, Jaguar moved from the Handelsweg in Ridderkerk, the Netherlands, to the other side of the site in Barendrecht. You could say that, we were looking forward to it for a long time.
We needed to upgrade our logistical and warehouse management systems, but for a long time were unable to because we had ongoing agreements with various parties. Now that we have moved into the Kivits-Goes building, we have outsourced our logistical and warehouse activities, and that turned out to be a good decision.
In the last building, we were already in contact with Rob van Opzeeland, who took care of the domestic retail transport and overflow for us, and after a benchmark, he turned out to be the best logistical partner. He and the Was it a must to remain at the trade centre? From a purely logistical standpoint, Duisburg would have been the best location, but such a move is quite an undertaking.
Besides, the Dutch market is still very important to us, with a share of per cent of sales. We also looked at locations in Breda, Moerdijk and the Westland, but in the end, we ended up in Barendrecht. The number of transport movements. Furthermore, our cooperation with Europe Retail Packing Barendrecht was part of the deal, so that we now have the extensive packing facilities of the Kivits-Goes location at our disposal.
MSP Onions is a family owned company that has grown, packed and exported onions since Product knowledge, worldwide export experience and the best location are making MSP the undisputed onion specialist! The process innovators Tummers Machinebouw B. What, actually, is your core business? With that, we are active on all continents by now. Ten years ago, we switched from being a generalist to being a specialist. Additionally, we are a true Spain specialist, which also very much suits the activities at the site.
Are import streams from overseas countries to Europe under pressure? As long as you add value, there will always be product available. Instead of an annual oversupply, the import volume suits the need on the market more often. The companies, which are looking for customers purely from their position of stocks, will get into trouble. Freshness will become an increasingly important factor in our trade. You have been working on social responsibility for years.
We took the lead in that, and we want to remain in that leading position. We were the first to achieve the Dutch Milieukeur certification mark with our producers for our oranges and grapes in South Africa. We are also on schedule with that. Sustainability is in our nature and is included by all Jaguar purchasers during the sourcing of our products. That also means we support our suppliers where possible, with knowledge and audits, for example.
Does all this result in a few extra cents or a preferred position in retail? No, that is certainly not the case with the price fighters on the market. It could definitely be an interesting market for us. That is because it requires quite a bit of attention and expertise. But it is certain that the organic market has much potential.
Consumers are ready for organic, and I think the organic trade will increase exponentially. There are more snags on the side of growers than on the side of trade, but I see increasingly better solutions in that because of new varieties and cultivation techniques. How important is the Chinese market in your future strategy? In I personally visited the Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong for the first time, with the idea of supplying the Asian market from there.
To be honest, I thought the fair was a bit disappointing, and I put the plans on hold, but that itch returned later that winter. I was fortunate enough to participate in an exchange programme with a Chinese university, for which I could personally select the students to carry out an assignment for Jaguar. Together we did extensive market research and took the first steps on the large Chinese market. How did the Chinese adventure start?
We could receive customers here, but we wanted more control over things, so we started our own. Extra care: unique base design ensures improved quality of fruits avoiding dents Extra volume: up to 35 liters more than the largest models on the market Extra safety: highly ventilated for quality preservation during storage — smooth welded lateral runners Extra performance : kg unit load and piles of 9 full units to optimize truck payload and cool chambers space. People appreciate our well-known boxes with golden print.
The Chinese are very loyal to brands, and we have definitely profited from that with our Jaguar brand. Contrary to Europe, you can charge per cent more for a strong brand of fresh produce in China. The advantage is that the Chinese like buying from Europeans. Demand has grown considerably and our Chinese branch became a completely independent company called Leopard Fruit Trading in the past year. In coming years, we will expand the Chinese activities by positioning our brand even more and further penetrating the market.
The market has so much potential. Which products do you mostly sell in China? Citrus is our principal product there too. Furthermore, the Dutch Conference pear is the apple of our. We were the first to pack the pears in the American way — as a present, including cover sheet, stickers and CA bags — and that was so popular quite a few competitors started doing that as well. But we in Europe sometimes forget how long it took for overseas citrus to become successful here. In the Netherlands, we want everything to be done quickly, and that's possi-.
The same is now true for bell peppers. Perhaps our government can be more supportive. Blueberries from Peru, which had high expectations, had quite a bit of difficulty on the Chinese market at first as well. And Maroc oranges, which are popular in Russia, the UK and Scandinavia, were not successfully received in China either, while the tougher Egyptian oranges are accepted. The product is now still unknown on the market, but if the flavour experience is good, the Chinese will eventually start buying Conference pears.
The Belgians have been sending large volumes of pears for some years now. The potential is just there, and experience has taught us the Chinese like the pears. But the cooled supply chain is an important point of interest. But at the same time, people expect the best of the. The availability of product suitable for the Chinese market can sometimes be an issue during certain periods.
Do you also want to play a part with local Chinese product? On the import markets local product is also separate, because not all growers have been certified, while food safety is very important in our vision. We have started lines with some growers to export garlic, ginger, pomelos and Fuji apples to Europe. Do you actually see yourself as a fruit trader? To be honest, purely trading never attracted me as a student or school-leaver. From the time I was a child — my parents had an agrarian company — I always thought the products, distribution and the people were much more interesting than that fight for a few cents more.
I truly believe that effects from trends such as blurring, new shop concepts, food boxes and internet sales will play a large role in future, and I see it as a fantastic challenge to respond to that with market-oriented concepts. Which role do you think social media will play in that? Like most of Franz Brentano's students, Carl Stumpf showed an interest in the philosophy of mathematics.

He was the first to develop precise photographic methods to calculate heights and morphologies of diverse auroral forms during four solar cycles. His theoretical analyses explained cosmic ray access to the upper atmosphere, 20 years before they were identified by other scientists. The authors present the life of this prodigious scientist in relation to the cultural life of early 20th century in Norway and to the development of the space sciences in the post-Sputnik era.
Carl Sagan and the Exploration of Mars and Venus. Inspired by childhood readings of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Carl Sagan's first interest in planetary science focused on Mars and Venus. Typical of much of his career he was skeptical of early views about these planets. Early in this century it was thought that the Martian wave of darkening, a seasonal albedo change on the planet, was biological in origin. He suggested instead that it was due to massive dust storms, as was later shown to be the case.
He was the first to recognize that Mars has huge topography gradients across its surface. During the spacecraft era, as ancient river valleys were found on the planet, he directed studies of Mars' ancient climate. He suggested that changes in the planets orbit were involved in climate shifts on Mars, just as they are on Earth. Carl had an early interest in Venus. Contradictory observations led to a controversy about the surface temperature, and Carl was one of the first to recognize that Venus has a massive greenhouse effect at work warming its surface.
His work on radiative transfer led to an algorithm that was extensively used by modelers of the Earth's climate and whose derivatives still dominate the calculation of radiative transfer in planetary atmospheres today. Carl inspired a vast number of young scientists through his enthusiasm for new ideas and discoveries, his skeptical approach, and his boundless energy. I had the privilege to work in Carl 's laboratory during the peak of the era of Mars' initial exploration.
It was an exciting time, and place. Carl made it a wonderful experience. Erickson and Carl Rogers. Debate with Carles Puigdemont" afholdt den Manlighet, mod och moral: Amanda Kerfstedts Carl Bergs skoltid. This article pertains that the text contrasts an ideal of masculinity based on physical strength with an ideal emphasizing morality. Although a true man, as described in the story, is expected to be strong as well as righteous, the moral component is the most important. The text shows that courage and force, which are not checked by a sense of ethics, may turn into brutality and abuse of power.
The association with women is utilized to stress a lack of courage in men as well as to redefine a masculine ideal that has focused too much on physical prowess instead of strength of character. A baseline habitat evaluation procedures HEP analysis was conducted on the Carl property acres in June to determine the number of habitat units to credit Bonneville Power Administration BPA for providing funds to acquire the property as partial mitigation for habitat losses associated with construction of McNary Dam.

Exotic grasses, while present, did not comprise a large percentage of the available cover in most areas. Baseline HEP surveys generated Habitat units were associated with the following HEP models: California quail Why did Carl Nielsen achieve such a favourable reception in England from the s on, compared to the rather reluctant recognition in continental Europe?
We would suggest that one reason could be an affi nity of features in his music with the concept of English national music. The affi nity Motivational interviewing and the clinical science of Carl Rogers. The clinical method of motivational interviewing MI evolved from the person-centered approach of Carl Rogers, maintaining his pioneering commitment to the scientific study of therapeutic processes and outcomes. The development of MI pertains to all 3 of the th anniversary themes explored in this special issue.
Applications of MI have spread far beyond clinical psychology into fields including health care, rehabilitation, public health, social work, dentistry, corrections, coaching, and education, directly impacting the lives of many people. The public relevance and impact of clinical psychology are illustrated in the similarity of MI processes and outcomes across such diverse fields and the inseparability of human services from the person who provides them, in that both relational and technical elements of MI predict client outcomes.
Within the history of clinical psychology MI is a clear product of clinical science, arising from the seminal work of Carl Rogers whose own research grounded clinical practice in empirical science. As with Rogers' work 70 years ago, MI began as an inductive empirical approach, observing clinical practice to develop and test hypotheses about what actually promotes change. Research on MI bridges the current divide between evidence-based practice and the well-established importance of therapeutic relationship.
Research on training and learning of MI further questions the current model of continuing professional education through self-study and workshops as a way of improving practice behavior and client outcomes. This paper provides some background on the four following papers, drawing on the research conducted within the CARL research project.
CARL is a cross-national 'social sciences research project into the effects of stakeholder involvement on decision-making in radioactive waste management'. The paper introduces the project, its aims, activities and describes the common framework used to look at each individual country. This article introduces a model for group facilitation in the humanities based on Carl Rogers' model for group psychotherapy.
Certain aspects of Carl Rogers' reflective learning strategies are reappraised and principles, specific only to psychotherapy, are introduced. Five of Rogers' axioms are applied to the tutorial discussion model: a…. Peeter Helme. Granville Stanley Hall with William James is the key founder of psychology of religion movement and the first American experimental or genetic psychologist, and Carl Gustav Jung is the founder of the analytical psychology concerned sympathetically about the religious dimension rooted in the human subject.
Their fundamental works are mutually connected. Among other things, both Hall and Jung were deeply interested in how the study of religious experience is indispensable for the depth understanding of human subject. Nevertheless, except for the slight indication, this common interest between them has not yet been examined in academic research paper. So this paper aims to articulate preliminary evidence of affinities focusing on the locus and its function of the inner deep psychic dimension as the religious in the work of Hall and Jung.
Carl Rogers and the larger context of therapeutic thought. Carl Rogers' classic account see record of the necessary and sufficient conditions for therapeutic personality change is examined in light of developments in theory and practice since the time he wrote. Rogers' ideas, which diverged from and were very largely a challenge to, the dominant psychoanalytic ideology of the era in which he wrote, are considered in relation to new theoretical developments in what has come to be called relational psychoanalysis.
They are also considered in light of the greatly increased influence of and substantial evidence supporting behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Points of convergence and divergence among these approaches are examined. This paper develops various figures noted by Carl Schmitt as forms of anti-political subjectivity. Whereas, from the German jurist's perspective, the operations which constitute a political way of being are those which produce and care for a representative form, the specificity of a anti-political subjectivity is shaped by those operations which erode or wear that political form down.
The paper aims to show that the main feature of the antipolitical way of being is the delay, meaning the indefinite postponement of the decision as such. Thus, under the various figures of the anti-politics that Schmitt deals with, this operation appears on different manners: the liberal form of postponing is the endless discussion and the compromise; the romatic form is the aesthetization of the world.
Carles Casagemas. L'acte creatiu com a recurs expressiu. The drawing became the revealer artistic process of the modernist period. The present article shows the apparently invisible interaction between the artist Carles Casagemas and the writer Joan Maragall through the drawings and writings of the first one and the writings of the second one. A work with more connections than we could ever thought possible.
One of the most evident connection is the presence of the woman like the main element used as inspiration. And at the same time the part that could make difference into their artistic conceptions. An existential criterion of normal and abnormal personality in the works of Carl Jung and Carl Rogers.
Full Text Available This article is the third in a series of four articles scheduled for publication in this journal. In the first article Kapustin, a I proposed a description of a new so-called existential criterion of normal and abnormal personality that is implicitly present in the works of Erich Fromm. According to this criterion, normal and abnormal personalities are determined, first, by special features of the content of their position regarding existential dichotomies that are natural to human beings and, second, by particular aspects of the formation of this position.
Such dichotomies, entitatively existent in all human life, are inherent, two-alternative contradictions. The position of a normal personality in its content orients a person toward a contradictious predetermination of life in the form of existential dichotomies and necessitates a search for compromise in resolving these dichotomies. This position is imposed by other people on an irrational basis. Abnormality of personality interpreted like that is one of the most important factors influencing the development of various kinds of psychological problems and mental disorders — primarily, neurosis.
In the second article Kapustin, b I showed that this criterion is also implicitly present in the personality theories of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, although in more specific cases. In the current work I prove that this criterion is also present in the personality theories of Carl Jung and Carl Rogers, where it is implicitly stated in a more specific way.
In the final article I will show that this criterion. The probing routine would be used for in-process verification of part geometry. In a clinical setting, the usefulness of optical coherence tomography OCT is strongly dependent on reproducibility of the measurement. Macula and optic disc parameters from the right eyes of 31 subjects were obtained twice with both instruments. Interoperator reproducibility was evaluated by use of the coefficient of repeatability CR , and the obtained measurements were compared between the instruments.
No difference in interoperator reproducibility could be found when comparing the 2 instruments and reproducibility ranged from 3. For all macula and retinal nerve fiber layer RNFL thickness measurements, there was a statistical difference when comparing the 2 instruments, except for RFNL measurements of the superior quadrant, with the Canon OCT-HS always evaluating the thickness to be thicker; however, the 2 instruments correlated well.
It remains to be evaluated how sensitive the Canon OCT-HS is to detect small subtle changes in optic disc parameters and macular nerve fiber layer thickness. Furthermore, due to the differences in thickness estimation, it is important to emphasize that SD-OCTs are not interchangeable.
Carl Adolph von Basedow was the son of an aristocratic family and was born in Dessau. He was the grandson of the famous pedagogue Johann Bernhard Basedow. In , he settled in Merseburg as a physician. He was soon acclaimed as a genial and skilled helper in all branches of medical practice.
He performed his own post-mortem examinations and published findings on a number of different diseases. His famous contribution in the thyroid field appeared in entitled "Exophthalmos due to hypertrophy of the cellular tissue in the orbit". Exophthalmos, goiter and palpitation of the heart have become known as the Merseburg Triad. In , he published the autopsy findings on a patient who died from "exophthalmic cachexia".
In Germany and some other countries, the disease was named as Morbus Basedow since In he pricked in his finger in the postmortem room when examining a patient who had died of typhus and he succumbed to septicemia at the early age of fifty-five. The date of his death was April 11, On April 14, he was laid in the Sixtus Cemetery in Merseburg. Basedow postulated that a wrong mixing of the blood manifested in cell tissue congestion and glandular vegetation cause the manifestations of disease.
If we abstract our modern knowledge and accept circulating antibodies and disturbance of the immune balance as a dyscrasia as well as the proliferation of lymphocytic clones and local cellulary infiltration in terms of immune thyroiditis and autoimmune orbitopathy as cell tissue congestion and glandular vegetations, then doubt arise whether we have indeed made much progress in the last years.
At least, respect for the genius of the general physician Carl Adolph von Basedow is becoming greater. We may all hope that in the contributions and the discussions, we shall learn where we stand at the end of. Ateljeedest Euroopas alates Pikemalt Julius Kleveri ja Otto Moelleri ateljeest.

The text brings the content of a lesson on Theories of Personality focused in the fundamentals of the Analytical Psychology of the Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung , whose work has been presenting significant contributions for Educational, Organizational and Clinical Psychology. The article's aim is to examine some aspects of the relation between politics and secularization in the thought of Carl Schmitt, departing of his analysis of the romantic subjectivity in his book Political Romanticism.
La respuesta a las dos preguntas es negativa. This project was born in focused to build a small solar-stellar observatory completely operated by remote control. The observatory will be at "Cerro Azul", a m peak in one of the best regions in the world for astronomical observation, at the Sonora-Arizona desert.
The OCS, with three 16 cm solar telescopes and a 55 cm stellar telescope is one of the cheapest observatories, valuated in US, Added to its scientific goals to study solar coronal holes and Supernovae Type 1A, the OCS has a strong educative and cultural program in Astronomy to all levels. At the end of , we started the Program "Constelacion", to build small planetariums through all the countries with a cost of only US80, Also, the webcast system for transmission of the solar observations from the prototype OCS at the campus, was expanded to webcast educational programs in Astronomy since July of this year, including courses and diplomats for Latin American people.
All of these advances are exposed here. Shklovsky and Carl Sagan played an outstanding role in modern astronomy. Their names are well known not only to professional astronomers, but also to millions of educated people in many countries, which are interested in modern state of science research.
Among these trends of modern science, which are difficult to define, are such problems, as the creation of Solar system, the origin of life on Earth, the evolution of living organisms on Earth from the simplest viruses to Homo Sapiens, the evolution of intelligence and technology.
And both scientists were high professionals in their fields. Joseph Shklovsky was a theoretical astronomer in all fields of modern astronomy geophysics and physics of the upper atmosphere of the Earth, Sun and Solar Corona, Interplanetary Medium and Solar Wind, Interstellar Medium, Supernova and their remnants, the Galaxy and galaxies, Quasars and Cosmology.
There is hardly a field in modern astrophysics except perhaps the theory of the interior structure of stars , where Joseph Shklovsky has not l a bright stamp of his talent…. The Carl Sagan solar and stellar observatories as remote observatories. In this work we summarize recent efforts made by the University of Sonora, with the goal of expanding the capability for remote operation of the Carl Sagan Solar and Stellar Observatories, as well as the first steps that have been taken in order to achieve autonomous robotic operation in the near future.
The solar observatory was established in on the university campus by our late colleague A. It consists of four solar telescopes mounted on a single equatorial mount. On the other hand, the stellar observatory, which saw the first light on 16 February , is located 21 km away from Hermosillo, Sonora at the site of the School of Agriculture of the University of Sonora. Both observatories can now be remotely controlled, and to some extent are able to operate autonomously.
In this paper we discuss how this has been accomplished in terms of the use of software as well as the instruments under control. We also briefly discuss the main scientific and educational objectives, the future plans to improve the control software and to construct an autonomous observatory on a mountain site, as well as the opportunities for collaborations. The Roosevelt years: crucial milieu for Carl Rogers' innovation. This study explores broad features of political culture and event of the s and World War 2 years, viewed in relation to the emergence and rapid early growth of the new therapy of Carl Rogers.
The paper traces Rogers' early professional life and examines distinctive emphases in sociopolitical thought and development during Franklin D. Roosevelt's leadership as President over the prolonged emergency of the Great Depression and the crisis of the War. The study includes a focus on the President's own outlook and style, pertinent New Deal innovations, and wartime needs.
Twelve features of this larger context are discriminated as together having vital importance for the new therapy and its founder. The congruent courses of the macrocontext and of Rogers' innovation are followed to the ending of Roosevelt's life. Direct causation is not attributed, but the evidence adduced newly points to particular contours of a larger environment favorable for the expression of Rogers' values and rare ability. In sum, the author concludes that a synergy of highly conducive historical circumstance and individual exceptionality contributed to the philosophical underpinnings, attitudinal values and early momentum of Rogers' client-centered therapy.
Carl Woese, Dick Young, and the roots of astrobiology. The beginning of the space age in the late s gave rise to innovative and interdisciplinary research concepts and perspectives, including the concept of "exobiology" as a way to approach the fundamental aspects of biology through a study of life outside of the Earth, if it existed.
This concept was embodied by NASA into its formal Exobiology Program and into the philosophy of the program both before and after the Viking missions that were launched to Mars to search for signs of life in Due to both management flexibility and an acceptance of the interdisciplinary nature of the problem of "life in the universe," NASA program managers, and particularly Richard S Young who ran the Exobiology Program beginning , have made some excellent investments in paradigm altering science of great use both on Earth and on future space missions.
The work of Carl Woese is one such example, which has revolutionized our understanding of the microbial world and the relationships of all life on Earth. This EBSD system will greatly augment the science return of the parent grant by allowing quantitative measurements of strain and textural fabrics in grains of all sizes and types across an entire thin section.
Such measurements will help link data that are already being obtained with optical light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and micro- tomography methods. More generally, the EBSD system will augment the PI's research on the petrology of extraterrestrial materials by providing an additional tool for petrographic analyses, with data that can be used to evaluate strain, grain orientations, grain size distributions, phase proportions, and mineralogy.
The equipment will enable quantitative characterization of the crystallography of primitive extraterrestrial materials, which will contribute to a better understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems, a major goal of NASA. Feeling our way into empathy: Carl rogers, Heinz Kohut, and Jesus. Throughout their academic careers Carl Rogers and Heinz Kohut developed two contrasting definitions of empathy that influenced the ways in which both men sought to help their clients cope with emotional suffering. These two different understandings of empathy are contrasted to each other and finally compared with the understanding of empathy demonstrated in the teachings and actions of Jesus.
It is hoped that through studying these ancient religious narratives we might be able to recover a deeper meaning of empathy. The accu Carl Cohen's 'kind' arguments for animal rights and against human rights. Carl Cohen's arguments against animal rights are shown to be unsound. His strategy entails that animals have rights, that humans do not, the negations of those conclusions, and other false and inconsistent implications.
His main premise seems to imply that one can fail all tests and assignments in a class and yet easily pass if one's peers are passing and that one can become a convicted criminal merely by setting foot in a prison. However, since his moral principles imply that nearly all exploitive uses of animals are wrong anyway, foes of animal rights are advised to seek philosophical consolations elsewhere.
I note that some other philosophers' arguments are subject to similar objections. The Carling programme on the CFB unit main results of gaseous pollutant emissions. The special case of operation at part load is also briefly discussed. The thesis that the theory of charismatic-plebiscitary democracy developed by Max Weber in the wake of the Weimar Republic was developed to its ultimate consequences by Carl Schmitt in the final crisis of Weimar has been hotly debated since it was first advanced in the s. This paper proposes a fresh look at the controversy. By comparing both authors' concepts of politics in their relation to the problem of modernity, it argues that the Weber-Schmitt affair is neither a baseless legend nor a case of natural continuity.

I conducted a 3-year study at Lake Carl Blackwell, Oklahoma to estimate effects of various fishing gears on the flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris population. Managers were particularly interested in the effect of handfishing or noodling on this population. I used a phone survey to assess angler effort and electrofishing and gill nets to calculate standard population metrics to assess composition of the current population.
Survey data indicated that fishing effort and harvest were highest for trotlines and juglines and lowest for noodling. Size distribution of fish harvested by noodlers was not different from sizes that were available in the fishery and was similar to those fish harvested with other gears. Overall, the Lake Carl Blackwell flathead catfish population appeared healthy. There were a wide range of sizes and ages in the population, and PSD indicated a well-balanced population with many preferred and memorable-sized fish.
Due to its rarity, noodling is probably not adversely influencing the population. Additionally, noodling at Lake Carl Blackwell does not appear to be as size-selective as previously thought. Macro-programs partly combined with external FORTRAN programs can be chosen from the menu for background subtraction, removal of multiple scattering effects by deconvolution, elemental quantification and several utilities.
For special applications or conditions the macro programs can easily be modified. Spectra from crystals of two inorganic transition metal compounds, ruthenium trichloride and vanadium disulphide, and from a biological sample are presented as examples of the application of this software. Only very little was known about the physiology of the kidneys until the middle of the 19th century. The turning point came in when the famous German physiologist and physician Carl Ludwig presented a theory about a two-step process filtration and reabsorption leading to the excretion of urine.
This paper turns the highlights on Ludwig and the period in which he lived. It also tells the story about the anatomical studies in the 17th century and the chemical approaches to urine and kidney physiology in the 18th century preceding the research of Carl Ludwig. The theory of filtration and reabsorption was opposed by another theory the secretion theory regarding the kidney as a gland, like for instance the salivary glands. The origin of this theory can be dated back to Marcello Malpighi in the Renaissance, but it was carried further on by William Bowman and especially Rudolph Heidenhain in the 19th century.
The research in the 's and 's marked the end of the fight between the two theories. It proofed that Ludwig was right and it gave him posthumously the recognition that he all the time had deserved. However, no comparisons have been published concerning the beliefs and works of Fuller and Jung. The purpose of this research was to compare and contrast the beliefs and written works of Margaret Fuller and Carl Jung.
Similarities and differences were reported among their ideologies. Similarities in their childhood and adult dreams, literary references, spiritual beliefs, and explorations of gender were described. Differences were reported, which included the focus of their writings and their ideas about who is to blame when things go wrong, and how to deal with the individual daemon in each person was also explored. Special consideration was given to how closely their writings intersect. Specifically, the authors questioned whether Jung was inspired by the ideas and writings of Fuller.
To answer this question, five possibilities were identified. In this paper I explore the shared interest of John Dewey and Carl Jung in the developmental continuity between biological, psychological, and cultural phenomena. Like other first generation psychological theorists, Dewey and Jung thought that psychology could be used to deepen our understanding of this continuity and thus gain a degree of control….
This paper describes CARL Computer Assisted Relaxation Learning , a computerized, exposure-based therapy program for the treatment of dental injection fear. The CARL program operates primarily in two different modes; in vitro, which presents a video-taped exposure hierarchy, and in vivo, which presents scripts for a dentist or hygienist to use while working with a subject. Two additional modes are used to train subjects to use the program and to administer behavioral assessment tests.
The program contains five different modules, which function to register a subject, train subjects to use physical and cognitive relaxation techniques, deliver an exposure hierarchy, question subjects about the helpfulness of each of the therapy components, and test for memory effects of anxiolytic medication. Nine subjects have completed the CARL therapy program and 1-yr follow-up as participants in a placebo-controlled clinical trial examining the effects of alprazolam on exposure therapy for dental injection phobia.
All nine subjects were able to receive two dental injections, and all reduced their general fear of dental injections. Initial results therefore indicate that the CARL program successfully reduces dental injection fear. Tosca is a curious and intriguing case in film history. Similarities between Prescott Lecky's theory of self-consistency and Carl Rogers' self-theory. The teachings of Prescott Lecky on the self-concept at Columbia University in the s and s and the posthumous publications of his book on self-consistency beginning in are compared with the many publications of Carl Rogers on the self-concept beginning in the early s. Given that Rogers was a graduate student at Columbia in the s and s, the striking similarities between these two theorists, as well as claims attributed to Rogers by Rogers' biographers and writers who have quoted Rogers on his works relating to self-theory, strongly suggest that Rogers borrowed from Lecky without giving him the proper credit.

Transcervical sterilization is a non-surgical method of permanent female sterilization that is widely used and critically discussed. A review of the historiography of the method reveals that instances of its coercive use are not included in the historical account.
This study offers a reexamination of the work of Carl Clauberg and Hans-Joachim Lindemann, to more deeply contextualize within the framework of current usage the coercive use of transcervical sterilization during the Third Reich and in postwar Germany. This inquiry is based on postwar criminal trial records on Clauberg, and on archival documents detailing Lindemann's activities in A comparative analysis examines arguments by medical historian Karl-Heinz Roth, and identifies shared characteristics and differences between Clauberg and Lindemann, their methods and scientific connections.
The results demonstrate that the technique of transcervical sterilization has an abusive potential that may be explained as a function of the person of the physician, of the scientific method itself, and of societal and political influences. The analysis supports the argument that insights from the cases of Clauberg and Lindemann are transferrable geographically and over time, and have the potential to inform current medical practice, such as transcervical sterilization with the Essure device, whose historiographic exploration remains a desideratum.

Carl Rogers' paper see record is arguably the most successful of his many attempts to clarify and render testable the ideas behind client-centered therapy. While each of the conditions that Rogers postulated has been linked to positive therapeutic outcome, taken together they have never been conclusively proved nor disproved to be either necessary or sufficient for positive outcome. Nevertheless, the overriding "take-home" message in this classic paper--that the therapist's attitude and caring presence is critical for therapeutic success--is one that has had virtually unparalleled influence in every segment of the psychotherapeutic community.
Clinical and theoretical innovations in the psychoanalytic community serve as examples of the following proposition: that Rogers' concepts, while accepted more than ever by a remarkably wide variety of psychotherapists, remain essentially unacknowledged as originating with him or in the tradition of humanistic and client-centered therapy.

German schools and faculties of veterinary medicine did not receive the sovereign right to award the degree "Doctor medicinae veterinarae" until the early twentieth century. Until then, in the nineteenth century there were two possibilities for veterinarians to earn a doctoral degree, usually referred to as the title of "Doctor": 1.
On the basis of an exceptionally excellent dissertation and after very stringent examination a candidate could be awarded the degree "Dr. A doctoral degree specifically in veterinary medicine could be earned only at a medical faculty. The Medical Faculty of the University of Giessen awarded the degree "Doctor in arte veterinaria" for the first time in In this study we prove that Giessen was not the first German university to award a doctorate in veterinary medicine, a priority which has never been questioned in the literature.
As early as , veterinarians could earn the degree "Doctor artis veterinariae" at the Medical Faculty of the University of Rostock, where three such awards are documented between and The designation "medicina" was also intially avoided in Rostock. Therefore, of particular significance is the discovery of a fourth such document from the Rostock University Archives, the doctoral diploma of Carl Jacob Friedrich Gillmeister, who at the age of 22 was awarded the degree "Doctor medicinae veterinariae" in Rostock after a successful defense.
This is the earliest, but also the last archival record of the German doctoral degree in veterinary medicine in the modern sense, because after Gillmeister no veterinarian could earn a doctoral degree in Rostock further more. Gillmeisters vita sheds light on the times and the difficulties of the veterinary profession in the poor agricultural area of Mecklenburg.
In this dissertation I discern what Carl Jung calls the mandala image of the ultimate archetype of unity underlying and structuring cosmos and psyche by pointing out parallels between his transpersonal psychology and Stanford physicist Leonard Susskind's string theory. I argue that Susskind's inside-out black hole model of our Big Bang universe forms a geometrically perfect mandala: a central Singularity encompassed by a two-dimensional sphere which serves as a universal memory bank.
Moreover, in precise fulfillment of Jung's theory, Susskind used that mandala to reconcile the notoriously incommensurable paradigms of general relativity and quantum mechanics, providing in the process a mathematically plausible explanation for Jung's near-death experience of his past, present, and future life simultaneously at the cosmic horizon. Finally, Susskind's theory also provides a plausible cosmological model to explain Jung's theory of synchronicity--meaningful coincidences may be tied together by strings at the cosmic horizon, from which they.
The history of a controversy]. In both his The Psychopathology of Everyday Life and his Lectures Sigmund Freud derived the terms unconscious, preconscious and conscious, particularly from slips in speech, slips in reading and forgetfulness. In these slips, Freud recognised parallels to dreams. In the work mentioned, he analysed these in depth as part of mental motivation.
In the papers referred to, Sigmund Freud paid tribute to Rudolf Meringer and Carl Mayer's study which was published in Meringer and Mayer showed as phenomena reversals and rearrangement of whole words, syllables or sounds, along with pre-tones or anticipations and echoes, word contaminations and word substitutions as responsible for slips of the tongue.
The present work demonstrates how passionately these three scientists have contributed to the controversy of their standpoints. For modern psycholinguistics and the psychology of language, speech errors are always an expression of a momentary malfunction of the human speech production system: for the cognitive process of speech production slips of the tongue offer an insight into speech processing.
Pre-tones and echoes, serialization errors, as Meringer and Mayer recognised, represent the vast majority of slips of the tongue. They do not reveal any hidden point. But with lexical-semantic slips of the tongue the question of mental motivation is admissible. This short paper is a sign of appreciation and gratitude: firstly, a modest birthday gift for Sigmund Freud, secondly homage to Carl Mayer, who influenced generations of neurologists in his 40 years of chairing the Psychiatric-Neurological Clinic in Innsbruck, so that Hans Ganner rightly spoke of a " Carl Mayer School".
But lastly, this short study is also-and especially-a late recognition of Rudolf Meringer, the great Austrian linguist. The view an individual has concerning mental processes and the "topology of the psychic apparatus" is decisive as to the power of determination attached to the unconscious. In , at age 31, Carl David Anderson became the second youngest Nobel laureate for his discovery of antimatter when he observed positrons in a cloud chamber. He is responsible for developing rocket power weapons that were used in World War II.
He served for many years as a physics professor at California Institute of Technology. Prior to Oppenheimer, Anderson was offered the job of heading the Los Alamos atomic bomb program but could not assume the role because of family obligations. He was a pioneer in studying cosmic rays. Otto Rank, the Rankian circle in Philadelphia, and the origins of Carl Rogers' person-centered psychotherapy. Otto Rank's will therapy helped shape the ideas and techniques of relationship therapy developed by the Philadelphia social workers Jessie Taft, Virginia Robinson, and Frederick Allen in the s.
Rank's work and these ideas and techniques in turn strongly influenced the formulation of Carl Rogers' person-centered psychotherapy. This article compares and contrasts will, relationship, and person-centered approaches to psychotherapy and discusses the social factors--primarily the professional conflicts between a male-dominated psychiatry and female social workers over the independent practice of psychotherapy--that were crucial in the dissemination of Rank's psychological thought and the early popularity of Rogers.
In the s, interviewing practice in sociology became decisively influenced by techniques that had originally been developed by researchers in other disciplines working within a number of therapeutic or quasi-therapeutic contexts, in particular the "nondirective interviewing" methods developed by Carl Rogers and the interviewing procedures developed during the Hawthorne studies. This article discusses the development of nondirective interviewing and looks at how in the s and '40s the approach came to be used in sociology.
It examines the factors leading to both the popularity of the method and its subsequent fall from favor. O Concerto para Clarineta, Op. This study discusses some of the work's performance aspects by means of examining its context related to its composer and compositional procedures. The discrepancies between the Sanfundet edition and the composer's manuscripts are observed. Analysis aspects of the work support the discussion about its initial reception and its role in the clarinet literature.
Many works from Reinhart Koselleck would have been influenced by Carl Schmitt's ideas. Such influences could be observed not only in critics to the philosophy of history, to the progress notion, to liberalism, but also in a methodological scope.
This article searches to investigate in which way it is possible to approach the methodology of both authors, respectively, the conceptual history and the sociology of concepts. The methodological analysis could be a key to understand epistemological premises obtained from a existential dimension of man, probably shared by both authors. Frequency response of rectangular plates with free-edge openings and carlings subjected to point excitation force and enforced displacement at boundaries.
Full Text Available In this paper, a numerical procedure for the natural vibration analysis of plates with openings and carlings based on the assumed mode method is extended to assess their forced response. Firstly, natural response of plates with openings and carlings is calculated from the eigenvalue equation derived by using Lagrange's equation of motion. Secondly, the mode superposition method is applied to determine frequency response.
Mindlin theory is adopted for plate modelling and the effect of openings is taken into account by subtracting their potential and kinetic energies from the corresponding plate energies. Natural and frequency response of plates with openings and carlings subjected to point excitation force and enforced acceleration at boundaries, respectively, is analysed by using developed in-house code. For the validation of the developed method and the code, extensive numerical results, related to plates with different opening shape, carlings and boundary conditions, are compared with numerical data from the relevant literature and with finite element solutions obtained by general finite element tool.
A biomechanical comparison of the Rogers interspinous and the Lovely- Carl tension band wiring techniques for fixation of the cervical spine. The authors conducted a biomechanical study in which they compared the uses of the Rogers interspinous and the Lovely- Carl tension band wiring techniques for internal fixation of the cervical spine.
An extensive biomechanical evaluation stiffness in positive and negative rotations around the x, y, and z axes; range of motion in flexion-extension, bilateral axial rotation, and bilateral bending; and neutral zone in flexion-extension, bilateral axial rotation, and lateral bending to the right and to the left was performed in two groups of intact calf cervical spines.
After these initial tests, all specimens were subjected to a distractive flexion Stage 3 ligamentous lesion. Group 1 specimens then underwent surgical fixation by the Rogers technique, and Group 2 specimens underwent surgery by using the Lovely- Carl technique. After fixation, specimens were again submitted to the same biomechanical evaluation.
The percentage increase or decrease between the pre- and postoperative parameters was calculated. These values were considered quantitative indicators of the efficacy of the techniques, and the efficacy of the two techniques was compared. Analysis of the findings demonstrated that in the spines treated with the Lovely- Carl technique less restriction of movement was produced without affecting stiffness, compared with those treated with the Rogers technique, thus making the Lovely- Carl technique clinically less useful.
From the start, the Max Planck Society regarded the new institute as an experiment that might perhaps be aborted a few years later. This is exactly what happened. In Habermas resigned, and then the institute was closed. Full Text Available A personality structure that appears in Erika is similar to one of an important part of Carl Gustav Jung psychology. Jung states that personality is a psiko that covers consciousness and unconsciousness.
This psiko will develop to be a stable unity. If every system develops in every individual absolutely, so a health and integrated personality will be achieved. Individual is not only as a psiko centre but also as a representation of the whole individual that unites consciousness and unconsciousness.
Testing aspects of Carl Rogers's theory of creative environments: child-rearing antecedents of creative potential in young adolescents. Longitudinal data involving children and their parents were used to test preschool child-rearing implications of Carl Rogers's theory of creativity-fostering environments Rogers, Indices were developed for each parent and for each mother-father combination that reflected the degree to which the parents' child-rearing practices and interactions with their preschool children matched the recommendations implicit in Rogers's description of a creativity-fostering environment.
Theoretical and methodological aspects of the study are discussed. It is, therefore, not justified to deny political responsibility even in 'basic research'. Carl Friedrich von Weizsacker identified classical physics as the venture of knowledge without love but believed that this boundary could be transcended.
The apparent neutrality of science must not be tolerated by the churches, however. Yet he tried to support his church and to participate in its actions. Full Text Available Abstract Background The therapeutic success of chemotherapeutic agents is often limited by severe adverse effects.
To reduce toxicity of these drugs, nanoscale particle-based drug delivery systems DDS are used. DDS accumulate to some extent in tumor tissues, but only a very small portion of a given dose reaches this target. Accumulation of DDS in tumor tissues is supposed to be much faster than in certain other tissues in which side effects occur "Kinetic Targeting".
Once saturation in tumor tissue is achieved, most of the administered DDS still circulate in the plasma. The extracorporeal elimination of these circulating nanoparticles would probably reduce toxicity. Primary endpoints were the efficiency and safety profile of DFPP, and secondary endpoints were side effects and tumor response.
No leakage of doxorubicin was detected during elimination, and no relevant DFPP-related side effects occurred. Only five grade 2 events and one grade 3 event mucositis, neutropenia or leucopenia and a single palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia grade 2 were reported. The biography of the former member of the Saxonian Academy of Sciences, Carl Christian Bruhns, and appropiately published in their Transactions, originated from a series of lectures given some years ago.
Gisela Munzel and Hans-Joachim Ilgauds, who have already written an authoritative history of Leipzig observatories, joined geophysicist Michael Borngen to describe various aspects of Bruhns' life and activities in different scientific fields. For the astronomical reader, Gisela Munzel's contribution is certainly the most rewarding one, and it covers almost the complete first half of the book. She not only describes Bruhns' astronomical career, but also supplies many details of his life.
Having passed something equivalent to a junior high school, his father urged him to become apprentice in his own field, that of a locksmith. Bruhns became a mechanic in several companies in Berlin, and started also part-time work as a computer at Berlin Observatory in He soon was "discovered" by its director Johann Franz Encke, and became second assistant in mid, first assistant in and observer in In mid he received his PhD on the topic of minor planets.
A prize assignment on astronomical refraction developed into his habilitation thesis of When in the observer Heinrich d'Arrest left Leipzig Observatory, there were plans to replace him by an astronomer who would later also take over the post of the aging August Ferdinand Mobius. Background People are frequently confronted with untrustworthy claims about the effects of treatments. Uncritical acceptance of these claims can lead to poor, and sometimes dangerous, treatment decisions, and wasted time and money. Resources to help people learn to think critically about treatment claims are scarce, and they are widely scattered. Furthermore, very few learning-resources have been assessed to see if they improve knowledge and behavior. This library was to be in the form of a database containing learning resources for those who are responsible for encouraging critical thinking about treatment claims, and was to be made available online.
In selecting resources, we wished to draw particular attention to those resources that had been formally evaluated, for example, by the creators of the resource or independent research groups. Methods CARL was populated with learning-resources identified from a variety of sources—two previously developed but unmaintained inventories; systematic reviews of learning-interventions; online and database searches; and recommendations by members of the project group and its advisors.
Results We have. People are frequently confronted with untrustworthy claims about the effects of treatments. We wished to include resources for groups we identified as 'intermediaries' of knowledge, i. We have created a database of resources called CARL. Weberian -power-, Marxist -class struggle- or Foucualdian -domination. It is my contention that the latter dilute politics into the economic, social, cultural sphere given that almost everything can be surmise to be an issue of power, domination or class struggle whereas the former highlights the boundaries of the political realm while still allowing for analytical connections and links to be established with the other spheres of society.

In the article, the author however tries to show that from to , Schmitt was arguing that total war and total hostility were dangerous for Germany as well as for the rest of Europe and warned against perpetuation of all efforts to totalize enemy that started in In his theoretical endeavors in this period there was place for the total state only - and especially for the total state strong enough to resist temptation of declaring total war on total enemy.
The total state he recommended Hitler and his Nazi comrades was German Reich, as a part of Europe ordered and divided in the huge spaces Grossraumordnung. Occupying in this way its huge space Germany should devote itself to the task of exploitation of various peoples such as Poles, Chechs and Slovaks, which were perceived as incapable of having their states and doomed to serve the master race - the Germans.
Carl gustav jung, quantum physics and the spiritual mind: a mystical vision of the twenty-first century. We describe similarities in the ontology of quantum physics and of Carl Gustav Jung's psychology. In spite of the fact that physics and psychology are usually considered as unrelated, in the last century, both of these disciplines have led at the same time to revolutionary changes in the Western understanding of the cosmic order, discovering a non-empirical realm of the universe that doesn't consist of material things but of forms.
These forms are real, even though they are invisible, because they have the potential to appear in the empirical world and act in it. We present arguments that force us to believe, that the empirical world is an emanation out of a cosmic realm of potentiality, whose forms can appear as physical structures in the external world and as archetypal concepts in our mind. Accordingly, the evolution of life now appears no longer as a process of the adaptation of species to their environment, but as the adaptation of minds to increasingly complex forms that exist in the cosmic potentiality.
The cosmic connection means that the human mind is a mystical mind. This essay contextualises his work with the development of the MPS, highlighting the institutional and personal networks upon which it was based. In , a reform process of medical education was started together with Harvard Medical International. The reform process was accompanied and supported by a parallel-ongoing Faculty Development Program. The students played a very important strategic role in all processes.
Students are the only ones who experience all years of the curriculum and are capable of detecting, for example gaps, overlaps, inconsistencies of the curriculum and assessments. Therefore, the in-depth knowledge of students about the medical school's curriculum is a very helpful and essential tool in curriculum reform processes and Quality Management Programs of medical education.
The reform in medical education, the establishment of the Quality Management program and the certification resulted in an improvement of quality and output of medical education and medical research.
The study of acoustics, harmonics and of music has been providing scientific models since Greek Antiquity. Since the early modern ages, two separate cultures began to emerge out of the study of music: a technical acoustics and an aesthetically and philosophically inspired musical criticism.
In the writings of Johann Friedrich Herbart a scientific approach to musical aesthetics and to music perception is taking shape that reinstalls the listening process as a highly complex and logical phenomenon. By opening music for a scientific psychological investigation, Herbart pioneered the physiologically and acoustically grounded seminal work by Hermann von Helmholtz On the sensations of tone which the author considered a prerequisite for musical aesthetics and music theory. Helmholtz in turn inspired the philosopher and psychologist Carl Stumpf to further investigate musical perception beginning in To Stumpf, it provided a paradigm for experimental psychology as mental functions and phenomena could be studied in detail.
These functions and phenomena are the actual objects of scientific study in Stumpf's inductive and descriptive psychology. Combining insights from statistics, ethnology, anthropology, psychoacoustics and the cultural history of mankind, Stumpf and his team developed a new blend of science which absorbs styles of reasoning, analytical procedures and academic convictions from natural history, the natural sciences and the humanities but at the same time identifies shortcomings of these approaches that fail to grasp the complexities of psychic functions.
Despite their reliance on the quasi-objective phonograph and despite their commitment to objectivity, precision and measurement, mental phenomena relating to tonal perception and to music provided too complex a challenge to be easily articulated and shared by the scientific community after The essay illustrates these tensions against the background of a history of objectivity.

Each winter he traveled the country by railroad, steamer, and stagecoach, speaking to large paying crowds in principal cities from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia through Cincinnati to New Orleans on the cosmos and our place in it, with special attention to possible inhabitants of planers orbiting other stars.
Mitchel had much the same attraction as Sagan did in our time, and awakened many people's interest in astronomy through the human angle, as Carl did. His argument was simple, and according to Frank Triplett goes back thousands of years: other stars are suns, our sun has planets with people on one of them, why should not other stars also have populated planets? But first Mitchel, like Sagan, always explained clearly the discoveries of astronomy that fleshed out this argument with facts.
There were many other similarities between these two great popularizers. Views of other American professional astronomers on life on other worlds will also be described briefly, from Denison Olmsted, Elias Loomis, Charles A. Young who. Letter to Carl Niigeli.

Confronting the challenge of effective, efficient health care for the elderly has led to many variations in service delivery modalities. Nurses are integrally involved in the authorization, coordination, evaluation and payment of services. The nursing role encompasses case management, including coordination of non-CNO covered services as well as those provided through the capitated payment schedule.
Thus, in addition to authorizing CNO services, the nurse also may coordinate services such as physician visits, home repair, transportation, respite services and home-delivered meals, even though they are not covered financially under the auspices of the CNO. Preliminary findings indicate that this model may be successful clinically and financially by determining and utilizing an appropriate mix, intensity and duration of services.

A conversation on nuclear weapons and the responsibility of nuclear scientists.
The 50th anniversary of the first nuclear explosion 16th July prompted the editor of this collection to look again at the part played by German physicists in the nuclear weapons issue. Carl Friedrich von Weizsaecker, one of the last surviving witnesses of this period, kindly agreed to give a comprehensive interview on the German nuclear programme and the responsibility of physicists.
The interview is published here for the first time and forms the central part of this brochure. It is complemented by two statements by Edward Teller and two historical letters. The author, in preparing this compilation, had in mind to contribute towards science-historical discussion and to give younger colleagues a graphic idea of the conflict surrounding nuclear research. In the Starnberg Max-Planck Institute one of the working groups was concerned with science as the formative condition--or "hard core"--of societal modernity, and with science as potential resource for solving social problems and addressing future goals.
More precisely, the group intended to differentiate between phases in which scientific disciplines predominantly care for their own paradigmatic completion and those allowing their theoretical potential resonate with external needs. The conceptual model was coined "finalization in science". It soon provoked a heated controversy on the dangers of social control of science. It finally reflects on the relationship between science development and change of consciousness in the context of scientific responsibility for the use of research outcomes.
Modern embalming, circulation of fluids, and the voyage through the human arterial system: Carl L. Barnes and the culture of immortality in America. By considering the work of American embalmer, lawyer, and physician Carl Lewis Barnes , this paper analyzes the emergence of modern embalming in America. Barnes experimented with and exhibited the techniques by which embalming fluids travelled into the most remote cavities of the human body.
In this sense, modem embalmers based their skills and methods on experimental medicine, turning the anatomy of blood vessels, physiology of circulation, and composition of blood into a circuit that allowed embalming fluids to move throughout the corpse. Embalmers in the late 19th century took ownership of the laws of hydrodynamics and the physiology of blood circulation to market their fluids and equipment, thus playing the role of physiologists of death, performing and demonstrating physiological experiments with dead bodies.
On this basis, he analyses and criticizes the effects of the expansion of aesthetic concerns on political action. Carl Ludwig's and Pavel Petrovich Einbrodt's physiological research and its implications for modern cardiovascular science: translator's notes relating to the English translation of two seminal papers. Respiratory interactions with the heart have remained a challenging physiological phenomenon since their discovery more than two hundred and fifty years ago.
In the course of translating the seminal publications of Carl Ludwig and his disciple Pavel Petrovich Einbrodt into English, we became aware of some under-appreciated aspects of their work that contain useful insights into the history of the phenomenon now called respiratory arrhythmia.
Ludwig observed arrhythmic effects of respiratory movements in experiments on dogs and horses and published his findings in He subsequently undertook further work on this problem, together with Einbrodt. Already in Ludwig had mentioned an exciting observation on the possible role of mechanical factors of the respiratory movements on the action of the heart in a dog in whom he had artificially induced bouts of coughing.
Einbrodt decided to systematically develop methods to increase or decrease the pressure of the air the animal had to breathe. He observed that this procedure led to a greater or lesser degree of compression or decompression of all the organs in the thoracic cavity without apparently causing harmful consequences during the time of its application. How the mechanical influence of breathing affects cardiac activity during respiratory arrhythmia has been the subject of scientific discussions and controversies over a period of more than years and is still unresolved.
Recent publications suggest that cardiac mechano-electrical coupling plays an important role in the emergence of cardio-respiratory interdependence. In this he was led by the conviction that scientists in the modern 'technical age' are responsible for consequences resulting from their applied knowledge. Nevertheless, his expertise was utilized as he encouraged parts of the Social Democratic Party SPD around Erhard Eppler to think about alternatives in energy policy.

Gatterer, one of the leading German historians during the Enlightenment, adopted the botanical method of classification by genus and species to classify the history of scripts. He used the forms of the alphabetic characters to measure the age of manuscripts and to map the process of history as a genealogy of culture.
Early on, diplomatics and ethnography combined the natural order of natural history and the cultural order of the alphabet with the attempt to register development and to document development by the evolution of forms. Based on the shared model of the alphabet and on the common necessity to classify their empirical material, natural history and the description of culture were related attempts in the middle of the eighteenth century to comprehend the alphabetically organized nature and a naturally ordered culture.

Zeiss Stratus Optical Coherence Jan 27, Although the link between iron metabolism and oxidative stress management is well documented, little is known about the connection between zinc homeostasis and the oxidative stress response in cyanobacteria. Zinc homeostasis in Anabaena is controlled by Zur , also named FurB. When overexpressed in Escherichia coli, Zur FurB improved cell survival during oxidative stress.
In order to investigate the possible correlation between Zur and the oxidative stress response in Anabaena, zur deletion and zur -overexpressing strains have been constructed, and the consequences of Zur imbalance evaluated. The lack of Zur increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide H2 O2 , whereas an excess of Zur enhanced oxidative stress resistance. Both mutants displayed pleiotropic phenotypes, including alterations on the filament surfaces observable by scanning electron microscopy, reduced content of endogenous H2 O2 and altered expression of sodA, catalases and several peroxiredoxins.
Transcriptional and biochemical analyses unveiled that the appropriate level of Zur is required for proper control of the oxidative stress response and allowed us to identify major antioxidant enzymes as novel members of the Zur regulon. A relatively economical method of chemical vapor deposition CVD has been developed for synthesizing diamond crystals and films.
Unlike prior CVD methods for synthesizing diamond, this method does not require precisely proportioned flows of compressed gas feedstocks or the use of electrical discharges to decompose the feedstocks to obtain free radicals needed for deposition chemical reactions. Instead, the feedstocks used in this method are mixtures of common organic liquids that can be prepared in advance, and decomposition of feedstock vapors is effected simply by heating. This mixture of compounds is chosen so that dissociation of molecules results in the desired proportions of carbon-containing radicals principally, CH3 and of OH, H, and O radicals.
Undesirably, the CVD temperature and pressure conditions thermodynamically favor the growth of graphite over the growth of diamond. The H radicals are desirable because they help to stabilize the growing surface of diamond by shifting the thermodynamic balance toward favoring the growth of diamond. The OH and O radicals are desirable because they preferentially etch graphite and other non-diamond carbon, thereby helping to ensure the net deposition of pure diamond.
The non-methanol compounds are included in the solution because 1 methanol contains equal numbers of C and O atoms; 2 an excess of C over O is needed to obtain net deposition of diamond; and 3 the non-methanol molecules contain multiple carbon atoms for each oxygen atom and thus supply the needed excess carbon A typical apparatus used in this method includes a reservoir containing the feedstock liquid and a partially evacuated stainless-steel reaction chamber. The reservoir is connected to the chamber via tubing and a needle valve or.

An aircraft noise synthesis capability is being developed so the annoyance caused by proposed aircraft can be assessed during the design stage.
To make synthesized signals as realistic as possible, high fidelity simulation is required for source e. This psychoacoustic study tests whether the jet noise component of synthesized aircraft engine noise can be made more realistic using a low frequency oscillator LFO technique to simulate fluctuations in level observed in recordings.
Jet noise predictions are commonly made in the frequency domain based on models of time-averaged empirical data. The synthesis process involves conversion of the frequency domain prediction into an audible pressure time history. However, because the predictions are time-invariant, the synthesized sound lacks fluctuations observed in recordings.
Such fluctuations are hypothesized to be perceptually important. Physik gestern und heute Von der Metallstange zum Hochenergielaser. Stereo matching image processing by synthesized color and the characteristic area by the synthesized color. We have developed the stereo matching image processing by synthesized color and the corresponding area by the synthesized color for ranging the object and image recognition.
The typical images from a pair of the stereo imagers may have some image disagreement each other due to the size change, missed place, appearance change and deformation of characteristic area. We constructed the synthesized color and corresponding color area with the same synthesized color to make the distinct stereo matching. We constructed the synthesized color and corresponding color area with the same synthesized color by the 3 steps.
The first step is making binary edge image by differentiating the focused image from each imager and verifying that differentiated image has normal density of frequency distribution to find the threshold level of binary procedure. We used Daubechies wavelet transformation for the procedures of differentiating in this study. The second step is deriving the synthesized color by averaging color brightness between binary edge points with respect to horizontal direction and vertical direction alternatively.
The averaging color procedure was done many times until the fluctuation of averaged color become negligible with respect to levels in brightness. The third step is extracting area with same synthesized color by collecting the pixel of same synthesized color and grouping these pixel points by 4 directional connectivity relations.
The matching areas for the stereo matching are determined by using synthesized color areas. The matching point is the center of gravity of each synthesized color area. The parallax between a pair of images is derived by the center of gravity of synthesized color area easily. The experiment of this stereo matching was done for the object of the soccer ball toy. From this experiment we showed that stereo matching by the synthesized color technique are simple and effective.
Dick Potsdam and J. Hamel Berlin. Besides a few short notices and book reviews, the book contains eight major articles, which deal with astronomical topics covering the time from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The first article by Michael Weichenhan Berlin deals with "the invention of the disk-shaped earth: a chapter of Copernican apologetics". The author shows that the concept of a "disc-shaped Earth" was by no means widespread in the middle ages, but restricted to the father of the church Lactantius and some adherents.
Nevertheless, it was used by adherents of Copernicus to show the absurd consequences of a strictly literal biblical interpretation -- here concerning the Earth's shape, disc versus sphere, there the geocentric versus the heliocentric system. This thorough philosophical study is followed by two very short articles. The result is that standard deviations are 80 arcseconds for Saturn and 89 arcseconds for Jupiter and Mars, an unexpectedly poor result in view of the general opinion that Tycho was famous for his precision work.
While he was inclined to Galilei early on, he was forced to propagate Aristotelian doctrine. The brief article is very concise, but extremely tiresome to read 3 pages of pure text are embellished by. Two documents discuss a breadboard version of advanced transponders that, when fully developed, would be installed on future spacecraft to fly in deep space. These transponders will be required to be capable of operation on any deepspace- communications uplink frequency channel between 7, and 7, MHz, and any downlink frequency channel between 8, and 8, MHz.
The document focuses on the design and operation of frequency synthesizers for the receiver and transmitter. Heretofore, frequency synthesizers in deep-space transponders have been based on dielectric resonator oscillators DROs , which do not have the wide tuning bandwidth necessary to tune over all channels in the uplink or downlink frequency bands.
To satisfy the requirement for tuning bandwidth, the present frequency synthesizers are based on voltage-controlled-oscillator VCO phase-locked loops PLLs implemented by use of monolithic microwave integrated circuits MMICs implemented using inGaP heterojunction bipolar transistor HBT technology.
MMIC VCO PLL frequency synthesizers similar to the present ones have been used in commercial and military applications but, until now, have exhibited too much phase noise for use in deep-space transponders. The two basic approaches to the generation of ' synthesized ' speech include a utilization of analog recorded human speech and a construction of speech entirely from algorithms applied to constants describing speech sounds.

In various bacteria, Zur , a zinc-specific regulator of the Fur family, regulates genes for zinc transport systems to maintain zinc homeostasis. It has also been suggested that Zur controls zinc mobilization by regulating some ribosomal proteins. The antibiotic-producing soil bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor contains four genes for Fur family regulators, and one named zur is located downstream of the znuACB operon encoding a putative zinc uptake transporter.
Purified Zur existing as homodimers bound to the znuA promoter region in the presence of zinc, confirming the role of Zur as a zinc-responsive repressor. This finding reflects a link between thiol-oxidizing stress and zinc depletion. We determined the Zur -binding sites within znuA and rpmG2 promoter regions by footprinting analyses and identified a consensus inverted repeat sequence TGaaAatgatTttCA, where uppercase letters represent the nucleotides common to all sites analyzed.

Climate Change and water-management as well as mobility-issues and air-quality confront municipalities with new challenges, in terms of open space planning and greenery in the city.
It is necessary to save the existing green in these days of budget-shortage and other priorities in communities. Municipalities have to raise new strategies to strengthen the awareness of the value of green in public and in the local business. Porosity is a fundamental parameter in hydrogeology. The empirical method of Beyer and Schweiger allows the calculation of hydraulic conductivity and both the total and effective porosity from granulometric data. However, due to its graphical nature with type curves, it is tedious to apply and prone to reading errors. In this work, the type curves were digitized and emulated by mathematical functions.
The latter were implemented into a spreadsheet and a visual basic program, allowing the fast automated application of the method for any number of samples. Zur Afuwertung der Kultur- und Landeskunde. Metal-organic frameworks MOFs , as an important kind of porous inorganic-organic hybrid materials with inherent outstanding physicochemistry characteristics, can be widely applied as versatile precursors for the facile preparation of functional MOF-derived materials.
However, there are plenty of sophisticated factors during the synthetic process, which is far from reaching the goal of effectively controlling the nature of MOF-derived materials such as the composition, morphology and surface area.
Therefore, it is urgently necessary to develop regular protocols and concepts for controllable syntheses of MOF-derived materials. In this minireview, we mainly summarize and analyze complicated factors in the fabrication of MOF-derived materials according to recently reported literatures, and this provides a new insight into the rational design and syntheses of MOF-derived materials. Currently, there is no accepted theory behind type-II, high-temperature superconductors, but there is a distinct relationship between anti-ferromagnetism and superconductivity. Our research focuses on synthesizing new superconducting materials by observing the link between atomic structure and magnetic moments of anti-ferromagnetic compounds and attempting to reproduce the molecular physics of these known materials in new compounds.
We believe that the physics behind this superconductor, where Fe has d6 valence electrons, contributes to the superconducting state, not the presence of Fe itself. For this reason, we are synthesizing materials containing neighboring transition metals, like Mn and Co, combined with other elements in similar crystal lattice arrangements, having ionization properties that hopefully impose d6 valence electrons on the transition metals.
This project was supported in part by the U. Biogenic synthesized nanoparticles and their applications. In the present scenario, there are growing concerns over the potential impacts of bioengineered nanoparticles in the health sector. However, our understanding of how bioengineered nanoparticles may affect organisms within natural ecosystems, lags far behind our rapidly increasing ability to engineer novel nanoparticles.
To date, research on the biological impacts of bioengineered nanoparticles has primarily consisted of controlled lab studies of model organisms with single species in culture media. Here, we described a cost effective and environment friendly technique for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were characterized with the help of UV—vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis which revealed the size of nanoparticles of nm size. Further the nanoparticles synthesized by green route are found highly toxic against pathogenic bacteria and plant pathogenic fungi viz.

An algorithm that includes a collection of several subalgorithms has been devised as a means of synthesizing still other algorithms which could include computer code that utilize hashing to determine whether an element typically, a number or other datum is a member of a set typically, a list of numbers.
Each subalgorithm synthesizes an algorithm e. The goal in formulating this mapping is to cause the length of the sequence thus generated to be as close as practicable to the original length of the set and thus to minimize gaps between the elements. The advantage of the approach embodied in this algorithm is that it completely avoids the traditional approach of hash-key look-ups that involve either secondary hash generation and look-up or further searching of a hash table for a desired key in the event of collisions.
This algorithm guarantees that it will never be necessary to perform a search or to generate a secondary key in order to determine whether an element is a member of a set. This algorithm further guarantees that any algorithm that it synthesizes can be executed in constant time. To enforce these guarantees, the subalgorithms are formulated to employ a set of techniques, each of which works very effectively covering a certain class of hash-key values.
These subalgorithms are of two types, summarized as follows: Given a list of numbers, try to find one or more solutions in which, if each number is shifted to the right by a constant number of bits and then masked with a rotating mask that isolates a set of bits, a unique number is thereby generated.
In a variant of the foregoing procedure, omit the masking. From the set of solutions, select the one that provides the greatest compression for the representation and is executable in the. One fascinating recent avenue of study in the field of synthetic biology is the creation of biomolecule-based computers. The main components of a computing device consist of an arithmetic logic unit, the control unit, memory, and the input and output devices.
Boolean logic gates are at the core of the operational machinery of these parts, and hence to make biocomputers a reality, biomolecular logic gates become a necessity. Indeed, with the advent of more sophisticated biological tools, both nucleic acid- and protein-based logic systems have been generated. These devices function in the context of either test tubes or living cells and yield highly specific outputs given a set of inputs.
In this review, we discuss various types of biomolecular logic gates that have been synthesized , with particular emphasis on recent developments that promise increased complexity of logic gate circuitry, improved computational speed, and potential clinical applications.

Biomimetic syntheses of racemic natural products. Racemic natural products are rarely produced in plants and microorganisms and are thought to be the result of nonenzymatic, spontaneous reactions. These compounds are often highly complex with multiple contiguous chiral centers that present a challenge to organic synthesis.
Formation of these racemates often occurs by cyclization reactions that can generate multiple stereocenters from achiral precursors. Biomimetic synthesis of these racemic natural products provides support for their proposed nonenzymatic spontaneous biosynthesis.
These elegant syntheses also provide scalable and efficient routes to these complex natural products. Although the number of reported racemic natural products is relatively low, an isolated natural product that has a very small optical rotation has been shown to be a true racemate. Thus, the occurrence of racemic natural products could be more common than thought.

Distinct subgenome stabilities in synthesized Brassica allohexaploids.
Three cultivated allotetraploid Brassica species Brassica napus, B. The chromosome numbers and complements of these allohexaploids and the self-pollinated progenies of successive generations S0-S7 were determined using multicolor fluorescent in situ hybridization that distinguished the chromosomes of three constituent genomes from each other. Both euploid and aneuploid progenies were identified. In the extreme case, loss of whole set of C-genome chromosomes led to the production of B.
The diploidized and non-diploidized meiotic behaviors co-occurred in all allohexaploid individuals of consecutive generations. The aberrant chromosome pairing and segregation mainly involved the chromosomes of A and C genomes, which resulted in aneuploidy in self-pollinated progenies. The mechanisms for the differential stability of three genomes and the stabilization of the new allohexaploids are discussed.

Feedback Synthesizes Neural Codes for Motion. In senses as diverse as vision, hearing, touch, and the electrosense, sensory neurons receive bottom-up input from the environment, as well as top-down input from feedback loops involving higher brain regions . Through connectivity with local inhibitory interneurons, these feedback loops can exert both positive and negative control over fundamental aspects of neural coding, including bursting [5, 6] and synchronous population activity [7, 8].
Here we show that a prominent midbrain feedback loop synthesizes a neural code for motion reversal in the hindbrain electrosensory ON- and OFF-type pyramidal cells. This top-down mechanism generates an accurate bidirectional encoding of object position, despite the inability of the electrosensory afferents to generate a consistent bottom-up representation [9, 10]. The net positive activity of this midbrain feedback is additionally regulated through a hindbrain feedback loop, which reduces stimulus-induced bursting and also dampens the ON and OFF cell responses to interfering sensory input .
We demonstrate that synthesis of motion representations and cancellation of distracting signals are mediated simultaneously by feedback, satisfying an accepted definition of spatial attention . The balance of excitatory and inhibitory feedback establishes a "focal" distance for optimized neural coding, whose connection to a classic motion-tracking behavior provides new insight into the computational roles of feedback and active dendrites in spatial localization [13, 14].
Legionella bozemanae synthesizes phosphatidylcholine from exogenous choline. The phospholipid class and fatty acid composition of Legionella bozemanae were determined using thin-layer chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry.
Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and diphosphatidylglycerol were the predominant phospholipids, while phosphatidyl-N-monomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidyl-N,N-dimethylethanolamine were present at low concentrations. Two independent phosphatidylcholine synthesis pathways the three-step methylation and the one-step CDP-choline pathway were present and functional in L. In the genome of L.
Genes pmtA and pcs from L. Bacteria grown on an artificial medium with labelled choline synthesized phosphatidylcholine predominantly via the phosphatidylcholine synthase pathway, which indicates that L. A new method to synthesize creatine derivatives.
Creatine is an amino acid that has a pivotal role in energy metabolism of cells. Creatine acts as an "ATP shuttle", carrying ATP to the sites where it is utilized, through its reversible phosphorylation by creatine kinase. Moreover, the creatine-phosphocreatine system delays ATP depletion during anoxia or ischemia, thus exerting a neuroprotective role during those pathological conditions.
Thus, its administration has been advocated as a treatment or prevention of several conditions involving the central nervous system. However, creatine crosses poorly the blood-brain barrier and the cell plasma membrane, thus its administration has but a limited effect. The use of more lipophilic creatine derivatives has thus been suggested. However, such a synthesis is complicated by the intrinsic characteristics of the creatine molecule that hardly reacts with other molecules and easily cyclizes to creatinine.
We obtained amide derivatives from creatine starting from a new protected creatine molecule synthesized by us, the so-called Boc 2-creatine. We used a temporary protection only on the creatine guanidine group while allowing a good reactivity on the carboxylic group.
This temporary protection ensured efficient creatine dissolution in organic solvents and offered simultaneous protection of creatine toward intramolecular cyclization to creatinine. In this manner, it was possible to selectively conjugate molecules on the carboxylic group. The creatine guanidine group was easily released from the protection at the end of the reaction, thus obtaining the desired creatine derivative.
NG2 protein-expressing oligodendrocyte progenitor cells OPC are a persisting and major glial cell population in the adult mammalian brain. The text entitled "Femicides in ethnic and racialized groups: syntheses " presents some of the discussions that took place during a seminar on this topic in Buenaventura. Buenaventura is the main Colombian port on the Pacific, a region rich in minerals and a corridor for the movement of goods, which makes it a strategic territory and a center for disputes.
At the seminar, the social and political determinants of femicide were discussed, understanding it as a tactic of waging war against women. The forum provided a space for academic discussion, but also for grievances over inter-personal violence, the manifestation of feelings and the elaboration of pain and grief through the medium of art.
We believe that the dissemination of this experience to the Brazilian public, in a country with ethnic, social and racial vulnerability similar to that in Colombia, will be of value to social and health workers. The scope of this paper is therefore to provide the opinion of its authors on the determinants of femicides and on actions to tackle them, in addition to a synthesis of the discussions and debates that permeated the event.

Chondroitin sulfate CS is a linear acidic polysaccharide composed of repeating disaccharide units of glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-d-galactosamine.
The polysaccharide is modified with sulfate groups at different positions by a variety of sulfotransferases. CS chains exhibit various biological and pathological functions by interacting with cytokines and growth factors and regulating their signal transduction. The fine structure of the CS chain defines its specific biological roles. However, structural analysis of CS has been restricted to disaccharide analysis, hampering the understanding of the structure-function relationship of CS chains.
Here, we chemo-enzymatically synthesized CS dodecasaccharides having various sulfate modifications using a bioreactor system of bacterial chondroitin polymerase mutants and various CS sulfotransferases. We developed a sequencing method for CS chains using the CS dodecasaccharides. The method consists of i labeling a reducing end with 2-aminopyridine PA , ii partial digestion of CS with testicular hyaluronidase, followed by separation of PA-conjugated oligosaccharides with different chain lengths, iii limited digestion of these oligosaccharides with chondroitin lyase AC II into disaccharides, followed by labeling with 2-aminobenzamide, iv CS disaccharide analysis using a dual-fluorescence HPLC system reversed-phase ion-pair and ion-exchange chromatography , and v estimation of the composition by calculating individual disaccharide ratios.
This CS chain sequencing allows characterization of CS-modifying enzymes and provides a useful tool toward understanding the structure-function relationship of CS chains. Modification of Lime Mortars with Synthesized Aluminosilicates. The increasing attention for restoration of buildings of historical and architectural importance has increased the interest for lime-based binders, which could be applied for manufacturing repair mortars and plasters compatible with historical heritage.
Different additives, admixtures or fibers may be incorporated to improve mechanical and thermal features of such materials. In this study synthesized aluminosilicates SA were applied as an additive for lime mortar. The technology of synthesis consisted in the deposition of aluminosilicates from a sodium liquid glass by the aluminum sulphate Al2 SO4 3.
The goal of this investigation was developing a new method of aluminosilicates synthesis from a sodium liquid glass and using this new material as a component for a lime mortar. Aluminosilicates were precipitated from the solution of aluminum sulphate Al2 SO 3 and sodium silicate. SA were then used as an additive to calcareous compositions and their influence was tested. Mortars were prepared with commercial air lime and siliceous river sand.
Air lime binder was replaced by 5 and 10 wt. The following analyses were made: grain size distribution of SA, X-ray diffraction analysis XRD , sorption properties, plastic strength and compressive strength of lime mortars. XRD pattern of the SA shows the presence of thenardite, gibbsite and amorphous phase represented by aggregate of nano-size cristobalite-like crystallites. Investment in African infrastructure is perceived as simply being too risky. Companies from the private sector are also profitably financing projects on the continent. But these are the exceptions, not the rule. Public-private sector collaborations are one possibility. For example, in the energy sector, independent power producers are working with governments to provide electricity to million Africans living off the grid. Privately funded but government regulated, these producers operate through power purchase agreements, whereby public utilities and regulators agree to purchase electricity at a predetermined price.
In South Africa alone, 47 projects are underway, accounting for 7, megawatts of additional power production. Similar private-public partnerships are emerging in other sectors, too, such as transportation. Among the most promising are toll roads built with private money, a model that began in South Africa. Not only are these projects, which are slowly appearing elsewhere on the continent, more profitable than most financial market investments; they are also literally paving the way for future growth.
Clearly, Africa needs more of these ventures to overcome its infrastructure challenges. We believe that with the right incentives, infrastructure can be an innovative and attractive asset class for those with long-term liabilities.
For years, a lack of bankable projects deterred international financing. But in , the African Union adopted the Program for Infrastructure Development in Africa , which kick-started more than energy, transportation, water, and communications projects. But some key reforms will be needed. Similarly, new financial products must be developed to give asset owners the ability to allocate capital directly to infrastructure projects.
Unlocking new pools of capital will help create jobs, encourage regional integration, and ensure that Africa has the facilities to accommodate the needs of future generations. But all of this depends on persuading investors to put their money into African projects. As business leaders and policymakers, we must ensure that the conditions for profitability and social impact are not mutually exclusive.
