In an ever-changing field like financial services, Q Investments knows that professional growth and development is vital to them staying at the forefront of their industry.
For this question, your interviewer is looking to ensure that your values surrounding professional development match the values of the company. Use this question as an opportunity for you to highlight the many ways that you grow and develop yourself to be the best that you can be in your career. Highlight any continuing education you have completed, any societies or groups that you belong to and any publications that you read on a regular basis that will prove to your interviewer that you aren't comfortable being stagnant in your career.
As technology and times have changed over the course of time, I see it as very important to be learning and changing along with the times. Just over the past two years, the Data Fest and Data Summit national conferences and participation in these events on a yearly basis is super important to me to help me grow and develop. To do this, I subscribe to and read many of the great publications that are out there. I also subscribe to many others.

At the heart of this question, your interviewer is asking you to take an honest look inside of yourself to discuss what you feel is the biggest learning curve you will have if offered this position.
This will give your interviewer a sense of how to handle your onboarding process if hired for the position and give them a sense that you have the ability to see what your biggest need would be. Similar to the what is your greatest weakness question, the key to answering this question is humbly pointing out a flaw that you may see and making a plan for how you will overcome that flaw.
My five years of experience out of college have been focused on management and technical consulting services, but I feel that I've built a very good knowledge base and experience for this role here at Q Investments. If given the opportunity to join your team, my initial focus would be to get enthralled in auditing in the financial industry and I'd do this by being attached at the hip to my colleagues and taking the time to talk one on one with a lot of other staff to help better understand what they'll expect of me in this role.
If hired for the job, I would hope to be invited to team meetings where I could introduce myself and my role with the team and I'd invite an open conversation with the entire team. Prior to your interview, try to take a long, hard look inside your skills and styles as a leader of others and prepare to present the best management style possible to your interviewer that fits the role that you are interviewing for with Q Investments.
Your answer should also involve solid research into the culture of Q Investments and the details of the role you are interviewing for. Some important things to touch on are your ability to promote a team atmosphere and your ability to delegate responsibilities when necessary.
I'm a firm believer that each person and role brings a specific skill set to the ocverall goals and purpose of a team and I promote a team based atmosphere by larifying everyone's role on the team, keeping every person's objectives clear, rewarding great performers on the team and holding people accountable for their actions. If hired for this role at Q Investments, you can be assured that my promotion of a team based atmosphere would help achieve even higher goals than you have set right now.
I'd like to highlight my abilities to lead as being a manager that works to grow and develop my staff to help them achieve their career goals and a leader who is able to provide direction and authority when the time for it arises. By knowing my team well and promoting our goals, I have the ability to assign work to the right people and follow through with my team on meeting all objective necessary.
At the heart of this question, your interviewer is looking to dive in and take a look at your critical thinking skills. While positive cash flow is usually a very good sign of a company's overall ability to settle its debts and handle future financial challenges, there are some situations where all isn't as it seems when looking at a company with a positive cash flow.
Whether you have run into this situation or not, it is important for you to point out that you are aware of situations where a positive cash flow can be misleading. A cash flow statement can often show positive cash flow when they take on new cash from loans or long-term debt.
While these items do show up as positive on the cash flow, they don't accurately reflect the profitability of the organization. At the same time, the company was delaying their payables. This showed a very skewed positive cash flow but the real story behind the curtains showed a company that was in serious trouble of keeping its doors open.
Compensation for Financial Advisors can vary from a straight salary, straight commission, salary plus bonus or a fee-only structure. You can speak openly and honestly to your interview about the types of compensation you have received throughout your career up to this point, but it is always important to do your research on Q Investments and how they pay their advisors when you elaborate on the compensation model that suits you best.
In the end, it is important to match your expectations with the compensation structure of Q Investments. At the the end of the three year base salary period, I was moved to a straight commission and have been on that for almost five years now. I am very confident in my ability to be a high performing advisor on commissions and bonuses and find that I have a very high motivation to succeed in this atmosphere. At the point that I am at in my career with an aging family and grandchildren on the way, a salary plus bonus structure is what I'm seeking during my job search.
From what I understand about this position, the compensation you are offering falls within those parameters. Are you able to expand on the bonus structure so I have a better understanding of how it works? While the challenges faced by general data analysts makes for a pretty long generalized list, this question is allowing your interviewer the chance to see your critical thinking skills by having you talk about which challenges you feel will be critical in the financial field. While there isn't necessarily a right or wrong answer in this question, make sure that you are able to speak intelligently about your answer and provide ways with how you can meet the challenges in your work with Q Investments.
But I've found the biggest issue to be the collection and implementation of real-time data to be the biggest hurdle. With markets continually changing on a daily basis, I've had to be diligent about updating reports for my advisors that I work closely with because what may be valid and real one day may be out of date the next. Being highly educated in automated processes and utilizing machine learning in other industries, I think the knowledge I could bring to the team here at Q Investments would really help advance your data analysis practices within my first six months on the job.
Your interviewer is posing this question to see how you will handle a situation where a client at Q Investments is working through a difficult time. As you talk about how you managed that situation, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you have the interpersonal skills to be effective from the client's perspective. In your answer, be sure to explain the importance of an empathetic approach with your clients and how that approach helps them get through a difficult time.
Knowing that this move was a very poor strategy, I needed him to hear that in most personal and educated way possible. With an active listening approach, I repeated back what he had told me and I reiterated that he wanted to sell them at a low price and hopefully buy them back down the road at a high price. This made the client take a pause and think. This was my opportunity to talk about market history and the odds that his stock prices would rebound over time.
He decided to keep his funds in the market at the time and a few years down the road, he called to personally thank me for the sound advice. The fact that I took a personal approach while educating him in the process to make his own decision was the definite key to success in this situation. A great situation where this happened was with a client that wasn't meeting their personal retirement goals to be done working at age At the point we were working together, she was 55 years old.
After a quick assessment of her finances, I talked to her about letting her two kids be responsible for their own college tuition. As a mother, her intuition was to support her children in every way possible but the reality was that it was hurting her own goals. Simply put to her, I told her that there are no loans available for retirement and that she was doing both herself and her kids a favor by taking the route I suggested.
The interviewer would like to know how you are seen by your colleagues. Select approximately three words that truly define who you are. Be sure to choose words that radiate positive thoughts! My work ethic has never been questioned, and I am very proud with the work that I have submitted in my career, so far. The high demands of a position as a Portfolio Manager or Administrator bring a lot of stress.
Market volatility, greed, underperformance and tough clients can all contribute to a high level of stress in this field. For this question, your interviewer is looking to gain insight on how you handle these stress factors on the job by having you talk a bit about what types of things cause you stress. While you talk openly about what it is that causes you stress or discomfort, make sure that you also talk through how you handle that stress in a safe, healthy and good for business manner.
For me, any stress that I feel is usually put on me by myself in having very high expectations for my work with clients. To help alleviate this stress, I've learned over time that the goals and expectations that I put on my work have to be realistic and attainable when they sometimes weren't early on in my career. We are relied upon to make sound decisions for clients based on insufficient information, all while trying to maintain confidence in our decisions.
This in itself is a daily stressor on the job and one that I don't take lightly. To help myself with this daily stress, I've learned to accept mistakes as they happen, own up to them with clients and work hard to alleviate those mistakes to put my clients back in the best position possible. The daily stressors of a career in financial advising can be burdensome, overwhelming and lead to burnout on the job. To get a sense that you can handle stress in a safe and healthy manner and be able to come to work each day with a clean slate, your interviewer is looking to delve into your personal life a bit to see how you manage stress.
When answering, you can certainly talk about the things you do on the job to keep as stress free as possible, but also be sure to talk about the things that you do outside of work to avoid burnout. Point out that you have the resources and ability to care for yourself to keep you at the top of your game on the job. Being a goal oriented person, I find happiness in obtaining goals and consider any necessary stresses in pursuit of a goal healthy.
Outside of work, I am a very active person that trains for marathons and spends a lot of time outdoors with my family.

During his tenure at Goldman Sachs, Mr. Cries, what are your thoughts on Q? Firm, people there, strategies, other scuttlebutt, reference checks you did, etc. Any thoughts and info you can share are appreciated since there's not much public on them. I have quite a bit of firsthand knowledge as I interviewed there and have worked with former employees. Firm as a whole is pretty secretive because Geoffrey Raynor is a very private person. That's not their style. They don't even have internal marketing people.
Having said that, the interview process is designed to find people who will fit into that type of culture. Other parts of the culture and people are that they are very smart people who know they're smart. I've heard from a number of people that the people are pretty much douche bags, which I won't disagree with. My interview experience wasn't the best in terms of people. I've heard about clocking time at Hoghland I don't have much experience with CLOs either, just very basic.
Not bad at all. It's hard to find much info about Q so anything is appreciated. I would love to work there as an analyst Hoping to apply sometime in early to mid They'll give you a credit agreement for you to read over the weekend usually and then ask you a bunch of questions about it. I think you might have to do a write up as well. I hear Highland pretty much sucks. Sure you get a decent salary and shitty bonus, but it's a demoralizing place to work. If you can handle it, I guess it has some brand name.
But ever since the downturn, they have yet to regain their former status. Q is primarily a credit shop. Practically they are multi strat and do everything but the majority of work is from the credit side, including distressed debt. Q got its start doing convertible arbitrage and branched out from there. Great info I definitely think Q may be a decent fit, or at least a lot better than Highland. Everything I've heard about Highland has been negative.
Pretty interested in exploring opportunities at Q in early Not sure if my experience will be good enough, but we will see. I know there are a lot of TCU people there, so I've at least got that. Took the test and its pretty straight forward but never heard anything after the two case studies.
I have a phone conversation with Q Investments tomorrow. Worth, TX. Anyone who has any info please help me with this. Thank you for your help. Looks like you know the exact process. Are the excel tests difficult? And what can I expect at the onsite visit? Anything technical or is it just a general interview? Anyone know anything about Q Investments LP.
I have persistently trying to contact them for the past 6 months without giving up and finally a position opened up and I was asked to take a case study questionnaire for them. I would appreciate all the help I can get so I can be in good shape to get that internship. Anyone have any insight on these guys down in Texas? Preferably culture and interview process. I made it pretty deep into their interview process. Never got in though.
Does anyone know if the same culture applies to the folks in their IT department? My resume is actually a great fit for one of their programming positions and am thinking about applying. I just got the email for the excel portion of the test. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what is on the exam and things to study for? I wanted to bump this thread. I have an excel test with Q Investments after doing a phone interview this week. One test is 90 minute and the other has a 60 minute time limit.
Any insights on what to expect? I've always been curious as to how those things work. I've taken an excel test for a previous internship actually. Typical straightforward stuff.
